Exclusive: Daga Reveals The Origin Of His Ring Name
Lucha Underground and Impact Wrestling star Daga reveals how he got his ring name.
For those that may not be aware of what his ring name means, it is actually the Spanish word for ‘dagger’ and Daga tells Fightful in an exclusive interview why he chose it.
“If you translate the word daga, it’s dagger in English, like a knife. It’s something that’s small and fast and deadly. It means that I can be fast and contend with anyone and anything,” Daga said.
When Daga was starting out as a wrestler, he admitted that there had been some names being thrown around, ideas for his character which even included him working under a mask. But the name Daga ended up being the name that stuck because being concise makes it easier to recall.
“I had a lot of ups and downs starting out in my career, but as you know, the mask is very important to lucha libre, I initially tried to work under a mask. A lot of names were being thrown around for me. There were plenty of things that I thought about doing. But at the end of the day, the shorter my name is, the easier it is for people to remember,” Daga said.
Most wrestlers get their ring names during training or after their career starts, but the actual origins of Daga, the wrestler, go all the way back to even before he started training. Daga explained that the name has been around since he was a teenager and once he started training. The nickname was a natural fit for his physical gifts and fell under Daga’s desire to have a short, yet easily memorable name.
“When I started training, I moved around really fast and I did everything fast. Daga was actually a nickname that I had before I started training. That nickname was something I turned into a ring name. Afterwards, I started really liking it and I like the symbolism of it with the swords. I like daggers and swords a lot. It’s something deadly, something cold. When I say cold, I apply it in the ring because I try to be cold-blooded. I never let the emotion get the better of me and make me commit an error. That’s how it came to be and I’ve been stuck with Daga since 14 years old,” Daga said.
Daga is currently set to have a big matchup at the upcoming “United We Stand” show where he will represent Team Lucha Underground alongside Aerostar, Drago and King Cuerno going up against Team Impact, consisting of Brian Cage, Moose, Eddie Edwards and Johnny Impact. “United We Stand” will take place in Rahway, New Jersey on April 4. You can stream the event on Fite, which allows you to watch on any device — Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, mobile, web and more.
