Exclusive Backstage Notes On WWE’s Super Showdown Event

WWE’s latest effort in Saudi Arabia was a brutal one. This week, our premium service Fightful Select revealed several pieces of backstage news from the show.

For those asking, Vince McMahon was at the WWE Super Showdown event last Friday in Jeddah, and we’re told that he goes to each one. It was suggested that the company and Vince see it as a way for McMahon to show those in charge of the deal that it’s a high priority for them.

Bill Goldberg’s presence was obviously a major talking point, and it was mentioned on commentary that his wife and son were in attendance at the event. Goldberg’s family was actually referenced in The Undertaker‘s promo last week, and as it turns out, part of Goldberg’s condition to work the event was to fly both over to Saudi Arabia with WWE.

The wrestlers that we spoke to were all shocked that the Goldberg vs. Undertaker match lasted as long as it did, with most predicting that it would have lasted four or five minutes at most.

The decision to not have women featured on the event came down to the wire, we’re told.

The heat was a big issue in Jeddah, as was reference on commentary multiple times. There were terrible tasting “hydration salt” drinks being passed out to help prevent dehydration, and the conditions were said to have been “miserable and borderline unworkable” for many of the wrestlers.
