Eric Bischoff On A Sting vs. Undertaker Match In 2020: They Would Disappoint Fans & Themselves

Throughout the Monday night Wars of the 1990s and continuing into today, there is one dream match that is ever-present on the minds of professional wrestling fans, Sting versus The Undertaker. What would happen if the two stalwarts of their respective companies clashed in the middle of the ring for the entertainment of the audience and ultimate brand supremacy?

On a recent edition of his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff commented on this potential matchup. Discussing how he would book it in a modern time period and discussing how he feels a match would come off between two men in 2020.

“There’s a lot to work with there. You could have put Undertaker and Sting together reluctantly. You could put them together, but with an underlying tension between the two of them or just enough doubt, you know, between the two of them to not be totally sure that they were going to work together well in the ring or not. There would be a lot to work with there by tagging those two up,” Bischoff began. “The fantasy booking aspect of it, it’s always nice to think, ‘yeah, what if you would have had Sting, you know, from 1997, 1998, when he was arguably still in his physical prime in there with The Undertaker. Same situation.’ Would that be great? Absolutely it would be great. But putting that together in 2015 or in 2020, people would be very, very disappointed and the talent themselves would be disappointed because they know that they’re not able to deliver the expectation that the audience has. They’re just not physically capable of doing it. And that’s just the reality. But I think putting those two together would have been a really, really interesting story to tell. And would have still had all of the potential of creating interest and building anticipation because of the inherent desire.”

It is always best to never say never in wrestling. In a recent episode of WWE Untold on the WWE Network, Sting openly said he would come back to the ring if The Undertaker match was an option, and it isn’t the only time he’s made that statement. Read more about that at this link.
