Eric Bischoff: I Knew Latest WWE Role Was Going To Be A Relatively Short Run
Although Eric Bischoff’s departure from WWE in his latest stint could be seen as very brief, Bischoff never saw himself staying with the company for a long time.
Earlier this year, Bischoff was named the SmackDown Executive Director but the role only lasted for a few months. In an interview with Digital Spy, Bischoff said he was approached by Bruce Prichard over coming back to WWE a couple of months before the announcement was made.
“Well, Bruce Prichard and I have been friends really since my tenure at WWE as a talent, going back to 2002, and we remained very close friends during that period of time. And shortly after Bruce [came back] to WWE, we were chatting. He said, ‘Hey, do you mind if I drop your name? Would you be interested in perhaps coming back to work for WWE?’. I said, ‘Sure. Feel free’. And a couple months later, I was packing my bags and moving to Stamford,” Bischoff said.
Bischoff said he was certainly excited to have a change of scenery and come back to WWE, but even he knew it wasn’t going to last long. Although he may not have thought he would have left the company after just few months, he envisioned it being lasting for possibly two or three years.
“Yeah, it was [laughs] definitely a change of scenery, but we were excited about it, my wife and I were excited about it, and we knew it was going to be a relatively short run, meaning, I thought two or three years. But, it wasn’t something I believed was gonna be a long-term type of position, but we thought, you know for two or three years, it would be a nice way to finish off my career in the wrestling business. So, we gave it a shot,” Bischoff said.
Fightful’s Jeremy Lambert did get to speak to Bischoff, who spoke about not being brought on by WWE to be a part of creative and the recent Roman Reigns storyline that took place over the summer. You can check out that interview at this link.
