Elias Reveals He Was Supposed To Face John Cena At WrestleMania 36
Elias was set to cap off a big three-year arc with John Cena at WrestleMania 36.
John Cena returned to WWE Raw in December 2017 and was interrupted by Elias, kicking off a feud that never had a one-on-one conclusion. At WrestleMania 34, Elias surprised Cena, who was waiting for The Undertaker to show up. The next year at WrestleMania 35, Dr. of Thuganomics Cena showed up to interrupt Elias’ performance. During this period, Elias was also tied to The Undertaker, who interrupted another performance the night after WrestleMania 35.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Elias reflected on those moments and the matches that didn’t heppen.
“New Orleans, I’m in the mix with John and the Undertaker,” Elias said. “The next year, I’m in there with John and the Undertaker again—John at WrestleMania, the Undertaker the night next on Raw. I was supposed to go on and face the Undertaker at the show in Saudi Arabia. That never ended up happening because of Goldberg, but that was supposed to be my match. The year after was supposed to be myself against John Cena at WrestleMania in a three-year running story. Things obviously changed and that didn’t end up happening.”
Cena ended up wrestling Bray Wyatt in the Firefly Fun House match at WrestleMania 36 while Elias took on King Corbin.
Elias returned from a torn pectoral muscle last Monday on WWE Raw and is set for a special performance on tonight’s episode.
Fightful will have live coverage of WWE Raw beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
