Edge Speaks About Main Eventing WrestleMania XXIV With The Undertaker And Why It Was So Special
Edge holds this moment near the top of his list.
WWE Hall Of Famer Edge is a former 11-time World Champion, a five-time Intercontinental Champion, has won Royal Rumble matches and seemingly done all that there is to do in WWE. Fast forward to present day and he has ventured off into the world of acting. With all of Edge’s success and his accomplishments, there are a few moments from his wrestling career that he holds in that “special place” and one of those moments was main-eventing WrestleMania XXIV in Orlando with The Undertaker.
On a match card that featured Floyd Mayweather Jr. taking on Big Show, and Triple H, John Cena and Randy Orton competing in a Triple-Threat for the WWE Championship, Edge and Taker were chosen to be the match to close the show and they went out there for 24-minutes and did what they did/do best. When Edge joined the ‘Primetime With Sean Mooney’ podcast, he stated that the reason that WrestleMania match is so special to him is because he was trusted by Vince McMahon to go out there with the bright lights shining on him and be in the ring with a creation of Vince’s such as The Undertaker and all of that wrapped up in one gave “The Rated R-Superstar” a sense of fulfillment.
“You know, I think it was a… to me it was a validation. It validated to me that I could be trusted with that baby. With Vince’s baby, with the main event of WrestleMania. The sign post throughout the entire year. All the cliches – it’s the Super Bowl, it’s the Stanley Cup, it’s the World Series, it’s that, in the WWE, in wrestling, and I think anyone who gets into that industry, to me, that’s the goal.” Edge continued, “The goal is to be the WrestleMania main event. Now that might not be the case for everybody but for me it was. That was the end goal and if I made that then I could truly say, ‘Okay, everything I set out to do, I did’, and that was the last thing. To do it against a guy like The Undertaker and for him to be so trusting with me, and know that we could go in and do it. It really is; it’s a validation. I never looked at it as… the people who ever doubted me, the vindication – I never looked at it that way although that drove me throughout the years, but it really just felt good and it felt like, ‘Right, this was where I was supposed to get to’.”
Ten years later since WrestleMania XXIV and The Undertaker is still competing in the ring. “The Deadman” wrestled at WWE Crown Jewel last Friday and to read about how he fared in that match, click here.
