Drew McIntyre: ‘Goldberg Is Who I Need To Fight To Take Myself And My Title Reign To The Next Level’
At the 2021 Royal Rumble event, Drew McIntyre will have a chance to test his mettle against a WWE Hall of Famer. For McIntyre, this is a dream come true.
Drew McIntyre was completely focused on Keith Lee, his scheduled opponent for the evening on January 4, 2021, during WWE Raw: Legends Night. Upon defeating Keith Lee, Drew McIntyre received applause from all of the WWE legends who were watching from the rampway.
This would have been the perfect ending to the evening for Drew until Bill Goldberg re-emerged and announced that he wanted to challenge McIntyre for his gold at the Royal Rumble in an attempt to prove that Goldberg’s era is the superior era. Despite a COVID-19 diagnosis a week later, Drew McIntyre accepted the challenge and now they’re going to lock horns on Sunday, January 31.
Speaking with Telegraph India, Drew McIntyre explained why this is a dream come true for him and why Bill Goldberg is the opponent that Drew needs in order to cement his legacy.
“It’s crazy! I remember my brother and I would flip between WWE and WCW, waiting for Goldberg’s matches. Then when the video games came along, I would create myself in the Create-A-Wrestler mode and fight Goldberg. I always thought I would be WWE Champion, because that was my dream, but I never thought I would be WWE Champion fighting Goldberg. It is who I need to fight to take myself and my title reign to the next level. It’s going to be an absolute war, with McIntyre and Goldberg.”
Drew McIntyre and Bill Goldberg do have one thing in common, they have both defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania. Drew McIntyre explained that despite all of the uncertainty that came along with 2020, his defeat of Brock Lesnar in the main event of the most unconventional WrestleMania in history will always be his favorite moment of the year.
“Just because of the gravity of the situation, it would have to be winning the WWE title. Not just because it was the first time I won that title or because I won it at the main event of WrestleMania (by beating Brock Lesnar). But also because of what was going on in the world at the time — the whole world had shut down, COVID was at its absolute peak, people had no live content to watch except WWE and WrestleMania, and I had that feel-good story right at the end of WrestleMania week, which put a lot of smiles on people’s faces. Hearing all the insanely positive feedback, millions of people being able to escape for a while through WrestleMania…, if I had to pick one moment from 2020, it would have to be WrestleMania.”
Should Drew McIntyre be able to defeat Goldberg at the Royal Rumble and make it to WrestleMania as WWE Champion, he will achieve his dream of welcoming back the WWE Universe at Wrestlemania 37 as the show is scheduled to have live fans. Learn more about that at this link.
Fightful will have live coverage of the 2021 Royal Rumble event beginning on Sunday, January 31, at 6 p.m. eastern time.
