Don Callis: I Try To Encourage People To Be Selfish
Don Callis wants more selfishness in wrestling.
Don Callis is the leader of the Don Callis Family, which currently consists of Powerhouse Hobbs, Konosuke Takeshita, Kyle Fletcher, and Will Ospreay. Callis is also looking for new talent, recently talking to Orange Cassidy on AEW Dynamite.
Speaking on Sunday Night’s Main Event, Callis was asked about his advice to his family.
“I try to encourage people to be very selfish. This used to be a very selfish business. Top guys were always very selfish. I was chatting with Adam Copeland about this the other day. He gets it, I get it. There is a fundamental disconnect with that now, though. Everyone wants to have a great match. They want to have a back-and-forth, and as a result…the only person I care about in this company is Don Callis. I worry about myself. By worrying about myself, I like to think I make Tony Khan’s job easier. ‘We don’t have to worry about Don, Don knows what to do.’ What I do, and it took me over 30 years to get here, and I credit Tony Khan and AEW for allowing me to be myself. I don’t have a character. This is me. I legitimately have a disdain for wrestling fans. I disdain pro wrestling as an industry. I just happen to be very good at it and I happen to be able to write history as I do it. For me, it’s fun. For other people, maybe they don’t like to see it. There is a fundamental disconnect. People need to be more selfish. I told Swerve Strickland when he won the World Title. ‘Let me give you a little advice, from someone who knows, from someone who has managed multiple world champions, be selfish. Look out for Swerve, don’t worry about anybody else. The minute you start worrying about other people, you’re a loser,'” said Callis.
Callis previously mentioned having his eyes on Swerve Strickland to join the Don Callis Family.
Elsewhere during the interview, Callis revealed he’s working on two books. You can learn more by clicking here.
