Dominik Mysterio Says His Teachers Used To Be Curious If There Was Actually A Custody Battle For Him

There was concern over Dominik Mysterio’s home life at his school.

In the summer of 2005, an eight-year-old Dominik made his WWE TV debut as part of an angle where Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero fought over custody of him. Eddie claimed to be Dominik’s biological father but ultimately lost the custody battle to Rey in a Ladder Match at SummerSlam.

Appearing on the latest episode of Out of Character with Ryan Satin, Dominik, now a WWE Superstar himself, commented on the storyline and how there was confusion on the part of his teachers as to whether or not what was happening on TV was real or not. He said the following:

“Yeah, no, honestly, it was crazy being a kid and being on TV because I think the most exciting part about all that was being away from school. I was in third grade and the last thing I wanted to do is be in school, so I was getting to travel with dad and you know, ride bicycles all around the arena so like, why would I want to be in school?

But then like I would come back to school and all the teachers would be curious on like, what’s my home life like because they didn’t know if my dad was my dad or if Eddie was my dad or if there’s actually a custody battle for me. So some of the teachers had to pull my mom aside or my dad when they would come pick me up and ask them what’s the deal because they didn’t think it was healthy.

But overall I think the kids were kind of like — they also were very curious about who my dad was but I always had to tell them like, No, I’m pretty sure my dad is Rey Mysterio.”

Although Rey pitched the idea to him before ever allowing it to happen on TV, Dominik wishes he had asked more questions, because even he wasn’t sure if he’d be going to live with Eddie Guerrero if his dad lost the match.

“Yeah, I mean even me, they kind of had had me hooked at one point,” Dominik admitted. “I was like, ‘What’s going on here?’ I don’t know if I thought it, but like, I think I thought I would eventually go home with Eddie if he won. I genuinely thought that I’d probably end up going home with him because I don’t remember them telling me that — They wanted to do this storyline, and my dad pitched it to me and I was all on board with it but I remember asking afterwards, ‘Am I gonna like, what’s gonna happen afterwards? When this match does happen, like, what if you don’t?’ I remember thinking as a kid, ‘What if my dad doesn’t win and I have to go home with Eddie?’ I never actually asked that, but like, I thought about it, like me personally, I’d sit there and think about it, and then I’d be like, ‘Well, Eddie’s cool. I don’t mind.'”

Dominik had his first match in WWE against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam 2020. In the past year, he has also held the SmackDown Tag Team Titles with his father. He and Rey were recently selected by Raw in the 2021 WWE Draft. They will start appearing on Monday nights beginning October 25, the Raw following Crown Jewel.
