Director Jason Hehir Explains Why Hulk Hogan’s Career Was Heavily Covered In The ‘Andre The Giant’ Documentary
Jason Hehir responds to the complaints.
The announcement of the 'Andre The Giant' documentary was one that drew up quite the anticipation and wrestling fans past and present were eager to see the film. It aired for the first time on television this past Tuesday on HBO. In the film WWE Hall Of Famer Hulk Hogan was heavily featured which is expected due to Hogan and Andre's careers being intertwined. But, there were a number of complaints from viewers about Hulk Hogan's career in the WWF being covered in detail when the film is based around Andre The Giant.
The director of the film Jason Hehir stated while on Bill Simmons' podcast that there were scenes that did not make the cut that would have shifted the attention of the film from Andre's career to Hogan's. He then went on to explain why a portion of the documentary focused in on Hulk Hogan.
“Vince Sr. banished Hogan from WWF for filming Rocky. He came back and went to the Minnesota territory, and that’s where Hulkamania started. Then Vince realized, ‘Alright, we’re going to take him over.’ That always fascinated me; how one guy went against the wishes of his father,” said Hehir. "What helped was that you need to keep on peppering Andre in somehow. What happened was when [Hogan] won the title from Sheik in ’84, Andre The Giant was there pouring champagne on him and that was a deliberate attempt on passing the torch as the alpha dog to Hulk Hogan.”
WWE Hall Of Famer and a man who has had the opportunity to do a number of segments with "The Eighth Wonder Of The World", Gene Okerlund spoke with TMZ Sports and shared his thoughts on the man and the myth-like athlete that we know as Andre The Giant.
