Darren Young Believes A Nexus Ten-Year Anniversary Was In The Works For WrestleMania Week
On the June 7, 2010 episode of WWE Raw, Nexus made their shocking debut, destroying the ring and ringside area to close the show.
Nexus was comprised of NXT season one rookies Wade Barrett, Daniel Bryan, Darren Young, Heath Slater, Skip Sheffield, Michael Tarver, David Otunga, and Justin Gabriel. The group was red hot coming out of the angle, but cooled following SummerSlam 2010 when they lost a five-on-five elimination match to John Cena and Team WWE.
Speaking to Josh Tariff of Josh Talks, Darren Young revealed that WWE may have had plans to stage a Nexus ten-year reunion during WrestleMania 36 week, but things fell through due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“I was actually supposed to be going back for WrestleMania, I think it was because the anniversary (of Nexus). If this pandemic didn’t happen, I would have been at Axxess and doing stuff for the Network. I was a little bummed out about it. WWE assured me that once everything calms down, they would bring me back to do stuff for the Network and autograph signings and who knows what else. That’s why I stay ready, so I don’t have to get ready,” he said.
When asked about remaining in contact with the Nexus members, Young said, “Out of all the Nexus members, I probably stay in contact with Heath Slater. He’s my heart. Even though we don’t talk all the time, anytime we do talk, it’s just like old times. Him and I would get into a lot of good trouble. I truly miss him. I know he’s going to do well. Ten years flies. Probably the most recent Nexus member I saw was Wade Barrett. I got to chat it up. All of the Nexus members are in a text thread and are always sending whacky GIFs, so we all stay in contact.”
It was reported in February by PWInisder that Young would be part of WrestleMania week, but no further details were given.
Following the release of Heath Slater on April 15, Daniel Bryan is the lone original Nexus member remaining in WWE.
