Court Bauer: MLW Competes With Other Companies By “Finding Another Avenue”

Court Bauer discusses MLW’s place in the current landscape of wrestling.

In 2019, there is no shortage of great wrestling. The WWE Network provides fans with NXT and NXT UK. ROH is partnered with NJPW and is about to venture into Madison Square Garden. AEW continues to make headlines without having run their first event. And that doesn’t even include top Independent promotions such as PWG, GCW, EVOLVE and more. With so many options to choose from, it can be hard to stand out.

Speaking to the Orlando Sentinel, MLW CEO Court Bauer discussed how MLW can differentiate themselves from other wrestling companies.

There’s four or five companies now vying for diehard fans on the open market, when you think of NXT, Ring of Honor, Impact and AEW,” Bauer said. “How does MLW compete? By finding another avenue. When we premiered on TV, we did very well on BeIN en Espanol, the Spanish-language channel. So if that’s where the audience is, let’s run with it. I have Konnan, the godfather of lucha libre, as my consigliere, good relationships with a large pool of talent, and experience working for AAA and Lucha Underground. And it has worked.”

Bauer continued, “Look at history: What killed WCW? Was it WWE, or was it WCW’s own incompetence? The biggest weakness is ego. There’s so much time wasted thinking about politics and what the next guy is doing. We just need to focus on our own product.”

Bauer and MLW got caught up in “politics” in January when Rush, who was scheduled to headline MLW’s show on WrestleMania weekend, had to be removed after signing with ROH.

MLW is set to hold their second live special tomorrow night, Feb. 2 on BeIN Sports. Fightful will have full results from Superfight following the conclusion of the show.
