Cody: Nothing Is Better In Wrestling Than Real

Cody discusses his character being “real.”

On the Oct. 30 episode of AEW Dynamite, Cody Rhodes and Tony Schiavone were filmed in a limo heading to the arena, just chatting about wrestling. The segments were praised by fans who saw the conversations as “authentic” as opposed to talent reading lines. Speaking to Peter Rosenberg on Cheap Heat, Cody discussed how he’s built his character on being authentic.

“It is very difficult for me to play a character because my life is very much stranger than fiction,” he said. “My childhood, upbringing, career and training. The unscripted, conversational — my dad used to call it communication. He refused to call his promo class, ‘promo class.’ He’d call it ‘communication class.’ Communicating means, the person watching is actually plugging in or identifying to something. That’s why you can’t have these scripted promos. That doesn’t mean I’m anti-writer, what it means is, if you’re doing a promo or interview on our show, it’s because we trust you already know how to communicate. In the case with me and Schiavone, that’s a real conversation. Nothing is better in wrestling than real. My crazy run at the moment is just real. Everything is authentic. It makes me incredibly vulnerable because I can’t just say ‘that’s me on TV.’ It’s me right now, too.”

Cody previously discussed how WWE left the door open for a more authentic wrestling show with how they produce and shoot their television. You can view his full comments by clicking here.
