City Of Tampa Won’t Cancel WrestleMania 36 At This Time, Decision Delayed For At Least A Week

It looks like WrestleMania 36 will go on as of now.

Hillsborough County in Tampa held an emergency policy meeting on Thursday to discuss the possibility of WrestleMania 36 being postponed or canceled in light of the coronavirus. During the meeting, Tampa Mayor  Jane Castor stated that the city has a few weeks until WrestleMania and a decision regarding the event doesn’t need to be made at this time.

The panel also noted that if WWE does not make a decision, they will re-open the discussion next week in order to reach a conclusion.

“I’m hoping that Vince McMahon and WrestleMania and WWE make the call themselves but a week from now, if they’ve not done that and we’re still in the situation we’re in, we’ll probably have to pull the plug on that,” said Hillsborough County Commissioner Les Miller.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called for a 30-day ban on all mass gatherings. DeSantis stated he doesn’t have the authority to cancel events, but that action should be taken by leagues in an effort to prevent the virus from spreading.

President Donald Trump instituted a 30-day European travel restriction that begins on Friday, Mar. 13.  The NHL and NBA have suspended their regular seasons due to the coronavirus. Festivals and conventions such as E3 and SXSW have also been canceled.

WWE issued a statement on the matter:

“While we remain committed to hosting WrestleMania at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, April 5, we are putting contingency plans in place in the event that it is cancelled by government officials, civil authorities and/or local venues,” the statement read. “The health and safety of our fans, performers and employees are our top priorities and we are monitoring the situation closely with our partners and government officials in Tampa Bay.”

Fightful will continue to update fans on the status of WrestleMania as more is known.
