Chelsea Green Talks Plans To Be Charlotte Flair’s Protege, Her Two WWE Call-Ups

Things didn’t quite go as Chelsea Green had planned in WWE, but there were actually plans

Green was originally called up in December 2019 with real-life best friend Deonna Purrazzo in what would be a series of singles matches. However, the VXT duo was tentatively set for something in the tag team division, according to Green in an exclusive interview with Fightful.

“I would guess that they called us originally for some sort of tag match. There was something going on at the time that was tag related and I can’t remember what it was now. But, I do remember some tag related stuff. It was tag related. But, then when we got up there I also heard that it was just, ‘Who are two girls that can go that haven’t necessarily been overexposed on NXT? It’s not an NXT talent coming up; it’s just a talent coming up.’ ‘Cause we hadn’t had that spotlight shone on us on NXT yet. So, I mean, that was pretty friggin’ cool. But, you know, originally VXT was myself, Deonna and Rachel. That was supposed to be a trio, but then Rachel got injured. So, that was so unfortunate, that whole thing was so unfortunate.

Green was excited for what was ahead. Even though it was an abrupt call-up, it was a call-up. Her goal was being reached.

“Honestly, I was so happy because I, again, worked my whole career to be on the main roster. So, I didn’t put Main Event in any different category than RAW or Smackdown, because I was so new. I was so new and at the time I had already seen a couple of the NXT girls go up, do Main Events to prove or to give the main roster time for them to decide, ‘What box are we putting her in? What is her character? What is her storyline? What is her deal?’ So, I was like, ‘Woo, let’s go. I’m on the main roster. My family gets to see me in Canada,’ ‘cause they didn’t get to see me in Canada in NXT if I was on NXT. It didn’t air then. So, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, all my friends are gonna be able to walk into a sports bar and say, ‘Put on RAW,’ and there’s their girlfriend on TV.’ So, I was in heaven and at that point, I had been told I was called up,” said Green.

Following the quick Raw match that saw Green lose to Charlotte Flair, she worked a couple of Main Event tapings, before heading back for an NXT live event. Green didn’t bat an eye at that.

“I didn’t think anything of the NXT live events because I had been told in the past that people would still do 30 days at NXT. So, there was nothing out of the ordinary for me there. It was also kind of fun to be up on the main roster on that big stage and then go get that pop in a little indie venue. That’s pretty cool, too, right? ‘Cause I wasn’t getting that before hand. I got that at the beginning of my NXT career, but then I turned into, ‘Well, she’s not on TV. So, she’ s not Bianca. She’s not winning the NXT UK title, so she’s not Rhea. So, who is she? Who cares who she is?’ Right? So, that was kind of cool to come back and have those matches and have them be excited to see me,” Green said.

Although many don’t look at that situation as a call-up for Green, that’s what happened. For a solid month it looked like she was on WWE Raw. Green expanded on the situation. By May 27, 2020, Green was officially called up.

“I originally got called up in December 2019. But, it was kind of a weird call up. It was a miscommunication, maybe, between NXT and the main roster. I was called up, but I wasn’t, but I was, but I wasn’t. Then I was on TV at NXT, which I was so happy about. Obviously I want to be called up, but nobody had made it official. So, to be called to TV was awesome. Then Triple H pulled me aside in May of 2020, right before the pandemic, or right around that time, because we had just done a tag match. Charlotte and I against Rhea and Io and that was the day I got officially called up,” Green reiterated.

Original creative plans called for Chelsea Green to be paired with Charlotte, as she recalled.

“I was just starting to get a little momentum. So, I actually didn’t hear anything. Funny enough when I was out there at the very end of the match I heard—Charlotte raised my hand and said something. Said something like, ‘She’s gonna be next,’ or something along the lines that made me think that I was either going to be partnered with her or I was gonna be her protégé. Then I heard rumblings of that in the weeks after that I was going to be—I don’t want to say the next Charlotte, but coming up behind her with her as my mentor. Which is amazing. I don’t know that you can get a better spot than that. Then kind of radio silence until the next storyline that I heard about. I heard about a lot of storylines,” said Green.

Unfortunately for Green, three weeks later, Charlotte was off WWE TV and wouldn’t be seen for six months. Green also wasn’t seen for months, never making her WWE Smackdown debut until the November match that saw her sustain an injury.
