Bruce Prichard Says The Idea To Use Rick Bognar As The Fake Razor Ramon Came From Paul Heyman
Bruce Prichard revealed Paul Heyman’s role in casting the fake Razor Ramon.
In the spring of 1996, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash departed from the WWF and made their way to WCW. In their attempt to recast the characters, new versions of Razor Ramon and Diesel were introduced to viewers in September 1996. Glenn Jacobs who had portrayed Isaac Yankem, and Kane afterwards, took up the mantle of Diesel, while Rick Bognar was cast as Razor.
On the latest episode of his Something to Wrestle podcast, Bruce Prichard was asked about Jacobs and Bognar and shared that the latter was actually mentioned to him by Paul Heyman. He said the following:
“This was actually a Paul Heyman idea. Paul Heyman says ‘I got a guy sitting in the ECW locker room that does a better Razor Ramon than Scott Hall could ever do. That’s a quote. I said, ‘Really? Well, shit.’
Just talking one day and he told me about this guy, Rick Bognar who would always come in and do a Razor imitation. We’re talking and I’m like, ‘Well, by God, that’s a fucking coincidence.’ Went back and said, ‘Hey man, this Rick Bognar guy you were telling me about’ — Actually, I think Paul told me about it before we were going to do the Razor and Diesel gimmick. I recall that and it was very very recent in those conversations. I was like, ‘Son of a bitch, may have a guy.’ So, I said, ‘Hey, give me Rick Bognar.’ I think Rick was in Calgary at the time.”
Though it lasted for a few months, the gimmick did not last beyond the 1997 Royal Rumble.
Rick Bognar sadly passed away on September 20, 2019, at the age of 49.
Aside from his time in WWF, Bognar also competed as Big Titan for Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s, winning a number of titles for the company. Bognar also wrestled for New Japan Pro Wrestling in the late 1990s as part of the nWo Japan stable. Bognar injured his neck in a match against Shinya Hashimoto in 1998, but would wrestle after the injury before retiring shortly afterwards.
