Booker T Says People Can Learn A Lot From WWE Backstage’s Promo School Segment

Booker T discusses WWE Backstage’s unique “Promo School” segment. 

The segment has a special guest make an appearance and have a brief promo battle with one of the hosts of the show. The first installment of the show saw Booker face off against MLB All-Star Adam Jones. 

The WWE Hall of Famer cut a promo which included figuring out which Adam Jones would be coming to the show as there are multiple high-profile people with the same name. Booker spoke about the segment and getting to work on his promo during a recent episode of “The Hall Of Fame With Booker T & Brad Gilmore” podcast. He admitted that he only had five minutes to work on the promo, but added that people, especially younger, up-and-coming wrestlers can learn a lot about cutting a promo just by watching the segment.

“I had a great time. I had a really good time because it was a bit different from the norm of what we do. We really got to express ourselves towards the fans. Some of the fans really liked it. The promo school segment I saw a lot of really good comments. Some of the young guys can take a lot of notes. The promo I cut on WWE Backstage, it was just a five-minute prep. I was thinking, ‘What am I going to say? What can I say and how can I go out here and make this something special? Let me get ready and do battle.’ When cutting a promo, you got to be thinking a couple of things. I got to break him down, but I got to put him over at the same time. How can I do that? I went to my phone and typed in Adam Jones and about three Adam Jones came up: ‘Pacman,’ the singer and him. I thought, ‘That’s it.’ You got to be able to correlate certain things and the young guys could learn a lot from being able to come out and float and cut a promo. They say the talkers, along with the guys that can do it in the ring, make it to the top of the business and I believe that,” Booker said.

The first episode of WWE Backstage ended up averaging 597,000 viewers with a 0.20 rating with the 18-49 demographic. The official premiere will begin on Tuesday, November 5 at 11 p.m. ET on FS1 with John Cena and Rob Gronkowski set to make an appearance.
