Billy Gunn Comments On ‘Letting Things Go’ When Triple H Called AEW A ‘Pissant Company’ At WWE HOF
At the 2019 WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, D-Generation X (Triple H, Shawn Michaels, X-Pac, Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, & Chyna) headlined the ceremony as they were inducted as a group.
During their speech, Triple H imitated Vince McMahon, saying he would hire and fire anyone that he wanted. Gunn commented that he couldn’t be fired, referencing that he had signed with the newly formed AEW. The crowd began chanting “AEW,” prompting Triple H to reply that Vince would “buy that pissant company, just to fire you again.”
Speaking at the Love of Wrestling 2022 Q&A, the New Age Outlaws were asked for their thoughts on the differences between the AEW and WWE locker rooms and if they talked while in different companies, leading to a discussion about Triple H’s comment at the 2019 Hall of Fame.
“You saw Hunter make fun of the product, let’s be very clear about what happened there,” said Road Dogg.
Gunn replied, “I let it go strictly because my wife told me to [laughs]. When everybody starts chanting AEW at the Hall of Fame, he’s got to try and shut it down somehow and whatever goes through his head, goes through his head, I’m not in control of that other than I could have punched him in the mouth. It’s what it is. I’m gonna bypass that.”
Dogg quipped, “We put the ‘fun’ in ‘dysfunctional family.'”
Gunn remains with AEW as an on-screen talent and coach.
When speaking about the differences in the locker room, Gunn said, “The locker room difference is, there’s not as much pressure with AEW as there is with WWE. It’s a little bit lighter structure, which kind of drives me nuts, just a little bit. We’re a lot younger. A lot of the guys in WWE have been through the developmental system. It’s a younger locker room. Everybody is into helping everybody and trying to understand what’s going on. They all haven’t been in that system up there, that system up there, for me, is a lot more structured, which I like. It’s a little loose in our locker room, but it’s good and fun. I get all my information through my boys because I don’t hang out with anybody. That’s not my wheelhouse. I’m not in the office, I’m not there yet, I’m just in my own room.”
Gunn is the manager, and sometimes wrestler, alongside his sons Austin & Colten Gunn.
The duo and Billy most recently scissored with The Acclaimed (Anthony Bowens & Max Caster) on AEW TV. After working as a producer and writer for WWE and NXT, Road Dogg was released by the company in January.
