Billy Corgan: “The NWA Is Not Abandoning Tag Team Wrestling’s Traditional Place In Pro Wrestling”

Billy Corgan is a big fan of tag team wrestling.

The National Wrestling Alliance recently announced that the Crockett Cup will return on March 19 and 20 and will play host to 16 teams from around the wrestling world. The event will be held at the Fairgrounds in Nashville, TN.

Smashing Pumpkins frontman and NWA owner Billy Corgan sat down with The Tennessean to discuss the event. He described it by saying, “This is comparable to a ‘Pro Wrestling Super Bowl’ or a ‘pro wrestling rock festival,'”

He continued on to say that he is a big fan of the art of tag team wrestling, detailing how the tournament shines a light on it.

“I’m a big fan of tag team wrestling,” says Corgan. “The Crockett Cup spotlights the unique art of in-ring storytelling that [tag team wrestling] allows. Young talents breaking out as stars and traditionally masters of the craft have been involved in this style of wrestling.”

Corgan then shifted gears, mentioning WWE and their penchant for undervaluing the tag team division. He vows that the NWA won’t be doing the same.

“WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) sets the standard in the industry, but for the past decade, they’ve not focused on tag teams as much as a core part of their programming,” he added. “[Different than WWE], the NWA is not abandoning tag team wrestling’s traditional place [alongside singles matches] in pro wrestling,” Corgan said.

He concluded by stating how wrestling promotions should be working together in a effort to maximize interest and provide fans with the best product possible.

“[Non-WWE affiliated] wrestling companies should work together to create ‘supercards’  to maximize potential fan interest and marketing opportunities,” Corgan began by saying. “Mainstream fans are interested in — even in a two-day format — storylines that have a series of confrontations, that lead to a conclusion.”

The NWA Crockett Cup tournament was last held in 2019 with Villain Enterprises (Brody King & PCO) defeating The Wild Cards (Royce Isaacs & Thomas Latimer) in the tournament finals.

Fightful will have more details on NWA Crockett Cup when they are announced.
