Billy Corgan: I Would Be Hard Pressed To Imagine CM Punk Would Want To Come To NWA

Billy Corgan doesn’t think CM Punk would be interested in coming to the NWA.

Since the reported All Out backstage brawl that happened earlier this year, fans have begun to guess on where CM Punk could end up next if he chooses to continue his wrestling career. Some fans have fantasy booked Punk in a scenario where he could return to WWE, while others have wondered if the self-proclaimed ‘Best In The World’ could end up in a company like New Japan Pro Wrestling.

In a new interview with NBC Sports Boston, NWA owner Billy Corgan discussed the potential idea of having CM Punk come into the NWA.

“I know him personally and I haven’t talked wrestling with him for years. I would be hard pressed to imagine he would want to come to the NWA given his other opportunities. Certainly, there are other companies that are bigger and can offer him a bigger payday. I’d be surprised if he leaves AEW. I’ve heard those rumors too, but I imagine it would be worked out. until it’s official, officially, I just assume he’s going to stay and they’re going to figure it out. He’s a benefit and bonus to them and the same in reverse. They’ve done a good thing to bringing him back to professional wrestling, where he belongs. He’s such an immensely talented guy. It’s wrestling, a lot of rumors and talk, for all we know, it’s part of a bigger negotiation going on behind the scenes. It’s wrestling, why wouldn’t we think it’s an angle on some other level? I tend to look at those things sideways. Plus, I don’t want to be in the business of trying to openly recruit people who work in other companies. I don’t like when people do it to me, I could name names, but I think when people are under contract, that should be respected as best as possible.”

Corgan went on and discussed his stance on contract tampering, noting that he likes to respect the legal lines that come with a contract.

“Some companies are super respectful about it to the extent that they’ll reach out and find out that somebody is under contract and they’ll be like, ‘Cool, I’ll talk to you on,’ and they’ll pick the legal date. Other people will be like, ‘Oh, okay, can you wiggle out of that?’ or ‘wink wink, it’d be a shame if you got out of your contract somehow because we’d like to hire you.’ It happens in professional sports, people get accused of that stuff all the time. I think wrestling works better when everyone respects the lines. We’ve seen in recent times, people working together is a benefit to fans and talent. The more transparency along those lines, publicly and privately, when people respect each other’s contractual status and talent that are under contract, it’s better for business.”

In the same interview, Corgan again commented on the lack of an EmPowerrr 2 pay-per-view and gave his reasoning as to why the second edition of the show hasn’t happened yet. To learn more, click here.
