Big E: People Like Us Can Only Get So Far

Big E isn’t sure if it’s worth it.

On last night’s episode of SmackDown Live, Kofi Kingston ran the gauntlet of The Bar, Rowan, Samoa Joe, and Randy Orton. The final victory over Orton was supposed to secure Kofi a WWE Title shot against Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35. But Vince McMahon swerved Kofi, adding Daniel Bryan as the final boss. Kofi could not survive the sixth competitor, losing to Bryan and the chance to turn WrestleMania into KofiMania.

Following the event, New Day reflected in their locker room, wondering if they would be better off quitting WWE. You can view the somber moment in the video above. Earlier this morning, Big E posted a video to social media, still wondering if quitting is the best option as “people like us” won’t make it to the top in WWE.

“You think of this business being, to some degree, a meritocracy. If you work hard, you show up early, stay late, do all the right things, jump through hoops, you’re respectful, you don’t break the law, you get good at your craft, you separate yourself from a character and in-ring perspective. You check all the boxes. If you do all of those things that you have a good chance of making it to the top,” said Big E. “Now, we understand the game. People like us will only get so far. You can climb the mountain — they’ll let you climb — but as far as getting to the peak or staying at the peak…it’s not a thing. People like us, historically, and moving forward clearly, can only get so far. We’ve done a lot of cool things here but clearly, we are never meant to be more than this. For people like us, that’s not enough. And it will never be enough. If this is all we ever will be. I don’t know if it’s worth it.”

Fans online have theorized that the current angle between Vince McMahon and Kofi Kingston boils down to McMahon “holding a black man down” and now Big E has injected a hint of that into the story.

As of now, New Day has not quit WWE (in real life or storyline) but the trio remains without a spot at WrestleMania 35.
