Becky Lynch Thought A Tournament Would Determine New Raw Women’s Champ When She Announced Pregnancy
On May 11, 2020, Becky Lynch announced her pregnancy and relinquished the Raw Women’s Championship to Asuka.
Asuka had won the Money in the Bank briefcase the night before and on-screen didn’t know she would be receiving the Raw Women’s Championship during the segment with Becky.
Speaking to Vincent Beltran, Becky revealed the idea behind the segment and her original thought as to what was going to happen.
“[Seth Rollins] and I, when I found out I was pregnant, we were trying to figure out the best way (to lose the title). I thought maybe a tournament for the title. A tournament for the number one contendership and then at the end, when it comes down to the last two people, just before they have their match, announce, ‘Hey, by the way, it’s not for the number one contendership, it’s for the title’ and have that be a very real moment. At the time, it was just before Money in the Bank and so, in collaborating with Paul Heyman, he said, ‘Well, we’re just going to have Money in the Bank be for the title and but they won’t know until the day after when you announce it.’ So, that’s what we did,” she said.
Becky previously mentioned that she told Asuka before the segment about her pregnancy, though she wasn’t supposed to.
Becky is once again Raw Women’s Champion after swapping titles with Charlotte Flair. The two women will clash at WWE Survivor Series.
