Baron Black Discusses Sound Effects At Battle Slam, ‘Lemonade’ Nearly Breaking The Speakers

Battle Slam held its inaugural event on April 24 from Atlanta, GA. The event combined the best of pro wrestling and hip hop with the two elements blending together as not only were fans treated to wrestling matches, but live performances from rappers such as Pastor Troy as well.

During the matches, sound effects would play after big moves, giving the show the vibe of a mixtape or rap battle.

Speaking to Jeremy Lambert and Stephen Jensen on Fightful’s The Spotlight, Black explained his decision to have sound effects during the show.

“Any, and everything, down to every last detail is a brainchild of mine when it comes to Battle Slam. It’s completely something that was in my brain since a child. Everything that happens, as far as content, it all came from this big ass forehead [laughs]. Those sound effects, they’re really synonymous in the hip hop world, especially on mix tapes, during parties, live DJ broadcast on the radio or in the club, you always hear those sound effects. I was like, ‘I have to incorporate that somehow.’ I came up with the idea of when you play the old wrestling games and Def Jam Vendetta and Fight for NY, you would hear those sound effects. ‘I guess we could do it that way and see how it works out.’ It worked out pretty damn well because everybody loved it,” he said.

Sounds effects were almost not part of the show as Adam Priest chose “Lemonade” by Gucci Mane as his theme song. The song, which already makes the speakers thump, had some extra bump as Priest found a bass-boosted version of the song.

“The funny part about that, he was asking me, which track to use and he sent Lemonade and another track. I was like, ‘I think Lemonade is the one.’ He agreed and the rest was history. He sent me the track and somewhere, he found a bass boosted version. I was like, ‘why the fuck did you send a bass-boosted version?’ [laughs] ‘You nearly broke everything,'” said Black.

Priest will be in action at Battle Slam Fight For ATL when he takes on JDX. He is taking suggestions for a theme song for Sunday.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Battle Slam Fight For ATL would stream live on FITE TV. Fans can check out the current lineup for the show by clicking here.
