Aussie Open Look Back On Competing On AEW TV Ahead Of Forbidden Door

Aussie Open are having a breakout year, and they stepped into the spotlight in AEW on the road to AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.

Aussie Open (Mark Davis and Kyle Fletcher) are having a breakout year, and they stepped into the spotlight in AEW on the road to AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.

The duo appeared on television several times, including the June 22 episode of AEW Dynamite, where they faced Orange Cassidy, Trent  Trent Beretta, and Rocky Romero.

Speaking with NJPW’s official website, the duo looked back on their AEW run leading into Forbidden Door, which allowed them to compete on national television. Davis noted that it all came together at the last minute, but they’ve been waiting for an opportunity to show the world what they can do for a long time.

“That whole experience came about really quickly. We had about a week’s notice before that first Dynamite, so we didn’t have the time to be nervous. There might be times where we’re a little anxious, but we’re hungry, we’re confident in what we can do and we’ve done it for so long now. So getting the opportunity to wrestle in front of all those people wasn’t nerve wracking, it was something we’ve been waiting for for a long time. And to do it with two of my best friends in Kyle and Ospreay, there was no issues with chemistry. It felt like a home game for us, not overwhelming at all,” Davis said.

Fletcher chimed in by noting that they were eager to prove that they’re the best tag team in the world, and competing on AEW programming was a fitting chance to do so.

“We were just ready. Just like we said about the pandemic, we were waiting and frustrated for so long not able to get those opportunities that when it finally came around we were screaming and ready to go. We know we’re the best tag team in the world and it’s just a case of showing everyone,” he said.

The interview was recorded prior to the beginning of the AEW World Trios Championship Tournament. By now, Aussie Open and Ospreay have advanced to the semi-finals; they defeated Death Triangle in the first round. The United Empire stablemates will battle Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks for a spot in the finals on the August 31 episode of AEW Dynamite. When previewing the tournament, Davis emphasized that they’re feeling good, and they’re all hungry.

“Good. Really good. We haven’t seen Ospreay for a while since he’s been killing it in the G1, but I know he’s as hungry as we are. The other side of our bracket, if the Young Bucks’ partner is who we think it’s going to be (interview conducted before 8/17) then he’s going to be working extra hard to try and wrestle them in the second round. After all he did for us, we’ll jump on a grenade for him to make that happen, win the tournament and take those titles,” Davis said.

Aussie Open previously stated that they wanted to give Ospreay the chance to slap Omega. You can check out their comments here. Meanwhile, Kenny Omega recently took a shot at Ospreay’s merchandise sales.
