Andrew Yang Names Randy Savage As His All-Time Favorite Wrestler
Andrew Yang has recently made wrestling headlines for calling out Vince McMahon and the labor practices of WWE on Twitter but Andrew doesn’t just do this to make a political statement, he actually grew up a fan of Vince McMahon’s brand of sports entertainment.
In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Yang opens up about his childhood wrestling fandom and being a huge supporter of Macho Man Randy Savage.
“My favorite wrestler was ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage. Ricky Steamboat, I liked. There is a whole generation of performers I liked that passed away quite early like Rick Rude, Curt Hennig, British Bulldog. I was like, ‘How the heck are they dead? I just saw them the other month.’ I went to live events with my brothers and saw Andre The Giant and how enormous he was. I feel like every kid in the 80s was a wrestling fan. I grew up with it and it was a family bonding experience.”
In that spirit, it should come as no surprise that Yang’s favorite wrestling match of all time is the classic Intercontinental Championship Match from WrestleMania 3 which pits Randy Savage against Ricky Steamboat. Yang also discusses being disappointed when Macho Man had to drop the WWE Championship back to Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 5.
“Macho Man vs. Steamboat was a mind-blowing match. I’m a Macho Man fan, partly because of that match. He loses that match, but he gets elevated from it because he’s so good. He goes on to become the champion. I loved the Macho Man title run and it made me sad when they gave the title back to Hulk Hogan the following year. I was like, ‘Nooo, I thought we were past this.’”
Elsewhere in the interview, Yang elaborates his stance on WWE’s labor practices and does not mince words when he describes how he feels about them. Learn more here.
