Amanda Nunes Defends Championship Against Ronda Rousey
In under a minute, Amanda Nunes defeated Ronda Rousey to defend her UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship.
The return of Rousey was the last big story of a crazy 2016 in UFC. The former champion entered T-Mobile Arena to take part in her first fight in over a year. In the time since her loss to Holly Holm, Rousey was nearly silent in media. After the loss, the championship changed hands two more time and the UFC was purchased by WME-IMG, who represents Rousey in her entertainment career. Rousey would be the biggest name possible for UFC Bantamweight Champion Nunes to make her first defense against. Nunes said she always trained to fight Rousey. She did not seem bothered by Rousey taking up the spotlight leading into UFC 207.
Almost immediately Nunes would land heavy punches on Rousey, Within the first few jabs, Rousey was stunned. She could not recover and was not able engage in any clinch. Nunes backed Rousey against the cage while landing a huge combination. Referee Herb Dean would stop the fight while Rousey was basically standing unconscious. Nunes won via technical knockout forty-eight seconds into the first round. The champion Nunes attributed her victory to her gym American Top Team. She urged those watching to forget about Rousey and to acknowledge the talent in the rest of UFC's Women's Bantamweight division. Rousey would not make any statement in the octagon.
