Allysin Kay Nearly Retired In 2018 Due To Blood Clots In Her Lungs
Allysin Kay has no thoughts about retirement at the moment, but she was nearly forced to walk away from wrestling in 2018.
Speaking to Taylor Wilde on the Wilde On podcast, Kay was asked about potential retirement plans. Though she has not hinted at any retirement and is only 33-years-old, Kay noted that she’s starting to feel like the veteran in the locker room as the next generation begins making their way in.
In discussing the topic, Kay revealed a scary situation that almost put her into forced retirement in 2018.
“Not really,” Kay said about any plans to hang up the boots. “People always have those thoughts, it’s normal. I’ve had the thought, but I never seriously considered retiring. The one time I thought I might have to prematurely is early 2018 when I was diagnosed with blood clots in my lungs. That was right at the end of an IMPACT taping. I ended up in the hospital for three days and I had to be on blood thinners for six months. My contract with IMPACT expired during that time. I didn’t know if I was ever going to be able to wrestle again. I had to go to a hematologist and do a bunch of testing to determine whether they felt it was caused genetically or outside medication. It wasn’t genetic, but it was up in the air for six months; was I ever going to wrestle again? If I had to stay on blood thinners for the rest of my life, it would have been very stupid of me to continue to wrestle. Any type of hemorrhaging could be the end if you’re on blood thinners like that. I’ve been busted open so many times. Even something internal that I didn’t know. I could have a brain leak. It could have ended my entire career. Other than that, I don’t see myself ever not being involved in wrestling in some capacity.”
Kay noted that she worked as an announcer for RISE during her time away from the ring.
She is currently a free agent following her NWA contract expiring. She recently challenged Serena Deeb for the NWA Women’s Championship at AEW Full Gear.
