AJ Styles Says Undertaker Confirmed To Him That WrestleMania 36 Was His Final Match

At WWE WrestleMania 36, AJ Styles and The Undertaker and the first-ever Boneyard Match. We would later learn via The Undertaker’s last ride documentary series that this was the final match the Undertaker would compete in.

For AJ Styles, it came as a surprise to him to learn that he would be the final Undertaker opponent in history. In a new interview with talkSPORT, AJ Styles reveals that he couldn’t even imagine naming an opponent for his own final match right now and is certain that one year ago Undertaker didn’t think that AJ Styles, a TNA Wrestling original, would be the final opponent in his legendary career.

“Somebody asked me who do I want for my retirement match? I said ‘I have no idea! I don’t even know when I’m going to retire, how can I even think about that!’ There’s no way The Undertaker was thinking a year before WrestleMania ‘I’m going to have AJ Styles as my last match!’ He wasn’t thinking about that. I wasn’t even on his list, I’m sure of it,” Styles said. “But, things happened the way they did. It literally was a phone call making him think about some things and I don’t know, I think it was him being on the verge of retiring and then having that match and saying ‘wow, how can AJ and I even top that?’

“It was a lot of effort brought about by a lot of different people, but the most, of course, was done by The Undertaker. I was just there to stand beside him and do my thing!

Undertaker would go on to have his final farewell at the 2020 WWE Survivor Series event but there are many who still feel like, at any point in time, the Undertaker could choose to come out of retirement. AJ Styles says Undertaker confirmed to him verbally that this was truly the end for him.

“We talked, but it was right. He did it the right way, he did it on his own terms. He didn’t have to do it because of an injury or something else,” Styles explained.

“He’s the one that said you know what, I’m OK with leaving it right here. And there’s something to be said about something like that because injuries plague this business and you never know how long you’re going to be able to hold out. Good for him that he was able to call his own shot.”

AJ Styles would go on to become the 25th victory at WrestleMania for the Undertaker whose official record at the major event is 25 -2. As for AJ Styles, he is currently focused on trying to recapture the WWE Championship, something he failed to do last night at TLC. Learn more at this link.
