AEW Signs Former Olympic Boxer Anthony Ogogo

AEW’s latest signing comes over from the world of boxing.

The new promotion had a presence at a Southside Wrestling event and AEW’s EVP Cody Rhodes announced that he has signed former pro and Olympic boxer Anthony Ogogo.

When the announcement was made, MJF stepped into the ring and taunted Ogogo, resulting in the former boxer to punch MJF. Ogogo had previously stated his interest in becoming a pro wrestler and that he could eventually sign with a major company.

Ogogo is perhaps best known for his run in the 2012 Summer Olympics when he won a bronze medal as a middleweight. He made his pro debut in 2013, winning his first 11 fights with seven of those wins coming by knockout. Ogogo then had his first title bout in the pro ranks in October 2016, but suffered a TKO loss to Craig Cunningham with the WBC International middleweight title on the line. After being dropped in the second round by Cunningham, Ogogo retired in the eighth round after complaining of blurred vision.

Rhodes is a fan of Ogogo and the two appeared on a “Road To Double or Nothing” video, discussing Ogogo’s life story.

This isn’t the first time a boxer is stepping into pro wrestling’s squared circle. More recently, lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is involved in a feud with WWE’s Braun Strowman and the two will have a match at the WWE Crown Jewel show on October 31. Fightful will have live coverage of that event.
