AEW Dynamite (6/21/2023) Results: Bryan Danielson Calls Out Kazuchika Okada, TBS Title Match, More

The Gunns (Austin & Colten Gunn) vs. The Hardys (Matt & Jeff Hardy)

The fight begins with Matt Hardy and Austin Gunn. Matt gets an advantage, and Jeff steps in. The Hardys double-team both Gunns. Jeff gets a two-count on the Whisper in the Wind. Colten knocks Jeff out. Matt nails the Twist of Fate later on, but Colten places Austin’s foot on the ropes. When the referee is not watching, Colten strikes Matt. Colten tags in and hits a modified DDT on Matt, but Jeff breaks up the pin. Jeff battles the Gunns on his own. He lands a modified Twist of Fate on Colten. Hardy is knocked off the top as Juice Robinson and Jay White come to the ring and interfere. With the 3:10 to Yuma, the Gunns win.

Winners: The Gunns

– After the match, White and Robinson assault The Hardys. Ricky Starks and FTR attempt to rescue the day, but they are outnumbered until CM Punk intervenes, seemingly at the request of the Chicago crowd. Punk assists in chasing Bullet Club Gold away from the ring. Punk jokingly claims he isn’t supposed to be there since he works Saturday Collision. He challenges White, Juice, and the Gunns to a match for AEW Collision.

Concession Stand Brawl: Mark Briscoe vs. Jeff Jarrett

Briscoe and Jarrett began fighting right away in the concession area. Briscoe throws Jarrett across a table. Jarrett gets mustard all over him. Mark launches hot dogs at Jeff. Karen Jarrett blinds Mark with condiments. Mark persists and attempts a dive off a ladder. Sonjay Dutt pushes Mark off a ladder onto a table. The match has moved into the arena. Dutt continues to interfere, and Jay Lethal appears and attacks Mark as well. Briscoe gets ganged up on by Lethal, Dutt, and Jarrett. When Papa Briscoe shows up at the timekeeper’s area. He chokeslams Lethal through a table. Satnam Singh arrives and attacks Mark Briscoe. Christopher Daniels, Best Friends, and the Lucha Brothers attack Singh. Briscoe pins Jarrett after Penta Superkicks him.

Winner: Mark Briscoe

– Backstage, Konosuke Takeshita, Don Callis, and Blackpool Combat Club were standing by. Jon Moxley claims they have put together a fantastic Forbidden Door team and are challenging The Elite to a bout at an AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door. The match will be a five-on-five. Mox, Shota Umino, Takeshita, Yuta, and Claudio vs. The Elite & TBD. Also, Danielson said he’d prove Kazuchika Okada is an amateur, and if he doesn’t show up tonight, he’ll be an amateur and a coward.

Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara & Minoru Suzuki vs. AR Fox, Action Andretti & Darius Martin

Suzuki delivers some savage blows to Andretti. Fox makes the tag and unleashes a barrage of offensive. Guevara intervenes and assists Jericho in gaining control. Jericho and Guevara double-team Fox. Fox rallies and Jericho initially prevents him from tagging out, but Andretti tags in and confronts Jericho. Andretti dives on Guevara and uses a crossbody to take Jericho down. With a dropkick, he knocks Jericho out. Suzuki tightens the choke, but Darius breaks it up. Suzuki smacks him across the face. Darius’ kick knocks out Suzuki. Guevara connects on a double cutter. With a kick, Fox knocks Guevara to the ground. Fox knocks Guevara down with a ringside dive. Andretti lands a springboard kick on Jericho. Martin enters the fray and clotheslines Jericho. As bodies fly, the match comes to a halt. Suzuki delivers a piledriver to Fox. Jericho’s Codebreaker takes out Andretti. Martin is caught in the Liontamer by Jericho and forced to tap out.

Winners: Chris Jericho, Minoru Suzuki & Sammy Guevara

– Renee Paquette enters the ring and asks Jericho about his altercation with Sting last week. Jericho believes it was a historic moment, but he isn’t overjoyed because he knows who Sting is. He accuses Sting of being self-centered since he appears wherever the highest bidder is. Sting gets referred to as a whore by Jericho. He dares Sting and Darby Allin to find a partner for an AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door trios match. Sting and Allin appear. As they accept the challenge, Sting tells Jericho that he is looking forward to spending time in the ring with him. Allin claims Jericho has many enemies, and they have their partner. Jericho inquires about who it is, and Allin responds that he’ll find out on Collision.

– Tony Schiavone and RJ City begin selecting names for the Blind Eliminator Tag Tournament, but they do not reveal who they are. According to Schiavone, the brackets will be announced next week.

– The Elite do an interview backstage where they claim that the BCC is always trying to utilize the numbers Advantage, but they’ve made some enemies along the way. They say they found an unlikely friend in Eddie Kingston. Kingston says that he dislikes and doesn’t respect them, but he wants to fight Claudio even more.

– Adam Cole describes his bout with MJF, calling it one of the toughest matchups of his career and giving “the devil” his due. He confesses that he did not win. MJF, on the other hand, did not win. Cole believes that in order to be the greatest AEW World Champion, MJF must face all comers. He claims that MJF has never defeated him. Cole summons MJF, who responds. MJF attacks the audience. MJF claims to have revived the original Cole. MJF claims he defeated Cole last week. As for the rematch, MJF says he had to decline since he is concerned about Cole’s health. Cole challenges MJF to a fight on the spot. Tony Schiavone interrupts them and makes a statement, revealing that Cole and MJF were matched together in the Blind Eliminator Tournament. Hiroshi Tanahashi comes on the video screen and challenges MJF to attend their AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door bout. MJF begins to decline the challenge again, and Cole indicates he is a coward. Cole believes MJF believes Tanahashi is superior to him. No one, according to MJF, is better than him. Cole starts a “coward” chant, and MJF accepts Tanahashi’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door challenge.

– The brackets for the Owen Hart Tournaments are announced. 

Orange Cassidy & Katsuyori Shibata vs. Daniel Garcia & Zack Sabre Jr.

Shibata and Sabre begin the fight. They feel each other out. Cassidy and Garcia go at it before Shibata and Sabre re-enter the fray. Garcia and Sabre jump on Cassidy. Shibata joins Cassidy’s rally. He cleans house before dropping Garcia with a solid shot. Shibata and Sabre Jr. trade punches. Cassidy and Shibata do Cassidy’s faux kicks. Shibata and Cassidy charge forward and pound their opponents with hard strikes. Cassidy launches himself into Sabre at ringside. Shibata was placed in the Dragon-Tamer by Garcia. Shibata counters with a heel hook. Sabre breaks it with a Neck Twist. Cassidy lands a DDT on Sabre. Cassidy inadvertently strikes Shibata with the Orange Punch, leading to Garcia pinning him.

– Willow Nightingale challenges Toni Storm this Sunday for the AEW Women’s World Title.

AEW TBS Title: Kris Statlander (c) vs. Taya Valkyrie

Statlander and Valkyrie square u. Statlander is stunned by Valkyrie’s strike to the face. Statlander sweeps Valkyrie and scores a two-count with a leg drop. The winner does a Moonsault off the apron. Valkyrie obtains an advantage. Statlander is grounded. Valkyrie slams Statlander for a two-count. Statlander lands Big Bang Theory for the win and the retention.

Winner and still champion: Kris Statlander

– Eddie Kingston in-ring. Eddie Kingston says The Elite left the arena because he doesn’t respect them. Eddie Kingston says he has an issue with MOX teaming with Claudio. Moxley comes out to interrupt him and says that he drew a line in the sand. There’s a tense moment between Moxley and Kingston. Kingston cuts through the BS by just saying that the fifth man on their team is Tomohiro Ishii. Ishii comes out. Claudio and Wheeler jump Kingston. Danielson comes out. They jump Kingston and Ishii. The crowd chants for Okada. Danielson says he’s not coming and goes to Stomp Ishii’s head in. Okada, of course, comes out. There is a brief staredown with Danielson before Yuta attacks “The Rainmaker” from behind. Okada gets the advantage, and he tries to hit Danielson with The Rainmaker, but Danielson is able to avoid it. Wheeler is not so lucky. Okada poses to end the show.
