Adam Copeland (Edge) On Beth Phoenix Being In The Intro Of His AEW Theme: It Felt Like A No-Brainer

Adam Copeland discusses the added significance Beth Phoenix’s voice adds to the intro of his AEW theme music.

When Adam Copeland, formerly known as Edge in WWE, debuted at AEW WrestleDream, all facets of his presentation were relatively dropped right into AEW. He kept his theme song of nearly 20 years, Metalingus by Alter Bridge. However, there was one slight alteration at the beginning of his theme.

For 25 years, “You think you know me” was the sound bite that preluded Edge’s WWE entrance throughout all iterations of his character. In AEW, there is still a sensuous female voice but this time the phrase is, “You think you know him” and the voice is one familiar to wrestling fans across the globe and very close to Adam Copeland’s heart, WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix, Adam’s wife.

Speaking with Bleacher Report’s Dr. Chris Mueller, Copeland explained the significance of having Beth provide that clip and the importance of keeping the sound bite overall.

“To me, an important thing about that is I always loved that. It was a female voicing that. I always thought that was just a different element that my character had that in wrestling a lot of characters maybe wouldn’t go that route. They’d have an angry guy singing or something, and I always loved that it was like this kind of sensual, sexy voice. So I said ‘I want you to do it because it would mean even more.’ So it just felt like a no-brainer,” said Copeland.

Copeland also reflected on being able to have Beth as a sounding board for ideas and how important it is to have a partner who understands what he goes through in his creative process, revealing that even before they were a couple they always had respect for one another as performers.

“What we’ll do more than anything is have kind of spitball sessions,” Copeland said. “I’ll have an idea. And I’ll say, ‘Hey, what do you think about this?’ It’ll usually be over coffee in the morning once we’ve taken the girls to school and I’ll cook something up. She’s my sounding board. Then we’ll kind of just start going, ‘Ooh, what if we did that? Wait, what if you did this.’

“It’s been so amazing because she’s really helped me come up with some stuff that I wouldn’t have thought of and I can’t think of off the top of my head, and that’s just really fun to sit over morning coffee in our rocking chairs on our deck and come up with cool ideas that inevitably see the light of day,” he continued. “We were big fans of each other before we were together. Like, from day one, the first time I saw her, I went, ‘Wow, man, she’s a real wrestler.’ So there was always just a deep-rooted respect for her as a performer.”
