Athena Says She’s Always Wanted To Wrestle Paige: ‘Any Company Would Be Stupid Not To Snatch Her Up’
Athena says Paige would be an invaluable asset to any wrestling company in any capacity.
Athena, formerly Ember Moon in WWE, was afforded the opportunity she was in WWE largely due to the groundwork laid by Paige. Paige was the inaugural NXT Women’s Champion and Athena herself even calls Paige and Emma (Tenille Dashwood) the two women that started the Women’s Evolution.
Recently, Paige announced that she would be leaving WWE in early July when her contract expires. In her departing statement, she says that she will one day return to the ring and while she has not been cleared yet, Athena tells NBC Sports Boston’s Steve Fall that she has always wanted to wrestle Paige and says that no matter the capacity, Paige would be an invaluable asset to any company she joins.
“I tell people all the time, everyone says the Women’s Evolution started with The Bellas. I highly disagree, It started with Paige and Emma,” she said. “Paige and Emma — or Tenille and Saraya, whatever name you want to call them. It started with them. That was the first mainstream women’s match [NXT Arrival] that got time that made people want more. Knowing that she’s capable of that, not to mention, seeing her story in the movie, and I’ve wrestled her mum on the Indies before and just got my ass handed to me, excuse my language.
“Of course, she’s someone I’ve always wanted to wrestle with,” she continued. “I actually rolled around with her when she was training to come back. She is an invaluable superstar in her own right; it doesn’t matter what brand labels are on there. She is absolutely phenomenal. Whether she’s gonna be a mouthpiece, whether she’s able to get back in the ring, any company would be like stupid not to try to snatch her up.”
Next for Saraya will be a stage show at Starrcast V called “Turning The Page.” Learn more here.
