Report: Cody Garbrandt Faces Raphael Assuncao At UFC Fight Night Columbus
A bantamweight division attraction has been added to UFC Fight Night Columbus as #5 Raphael Assuncao faces #8 Cody Garbrandt.
Brett Okamoto of ESPN first reported the bout, but its placement on the card isn’t known at this time.
Assuncao (27-7-0) enters the contest while in the midst of a two fight losing streak, having dropped bouts to the duo of Marlon Moraes and Cory Sandhagen. Assuncao hasn’t picked up a victory in over a year and that last win came over Rob Font at UFC 226 in July of 2018. Assuncao has suffered seven losses as a professional MMA fighter and four of them came by way of decision.
Garbrandt (11-3-0) comes into the contest riding a three fight losing streak, dropping bouts to TJ Dillashaw (twice) and Pedro Munhoz. Garbrandt is a former UFC Bantamweight Champion, defeating Dominick Cruz by unanimous decision at UFC 207 to win the gold. Garbrandt hasn’t earned a victory in over three years, with that last win coming at the aforementioned UFC 207 event in December of 2016.
UFC Fight Night Columbus takes place on Saturday, March 28 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio with Francis Ngannou and Jairzinho Rozenstruik headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, while broadcast plans have yet to be revealed.
