Dana White Says Tony Ferguson Will Get The Next Lightweight Title Shot

UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier will collide in the main event of UFC 242.

Former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Tony Ferguson is next for the winner of that bout according to UFC President Dana White, as long as Ferguson is ready to go.

“Listen, again, if Tony Ferguson’s ready,” White told Brett Okamoto of ESPN (via Damon Martin of MMA Fighting). “Tony Ferguson’s been offered opportunities before that he hasn’t taken. If Tony’s ready then yeah [he’s next].”

The words of the UFC President echo what was said by Ferguson, Nurmagomedov and Poirier, who all agreed that Ferguson should be getting the next lightweight title shot. Ferguson and Nurmagomedov have both been scheduled to fight multiple times in the past, but various injuries and health issues have prevented those encounters from happening.

UFC 242 takes place on Saturday, September 7 from The Arena in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi with Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier headlining. Fightful is going to be providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
