Weili Zhang Wants To Headline At UFC Pay-Per-View In China
Weili Zhang made some history at UFC Fight Night Shenzhen, as she won both the UFC Women’s Strawweight Title and became the first Chinese born fighter to hold UFC gold.
The newly crowned champion is now onto her next goal, which is to headline a UFC pay-per-view in China.
“Yes, I would like to get on a pay-per-view event, but I also want a pay-per-view event to hold in China. This is my wish,” Zhang said at the UFC Fight Night Shenzhen post-fight press conference (via Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting). “If Dana wants me to fight in the U.S. it will be fine, but please get all my corners a visa because last time my corners didn’t come. Several corners could not come because of a visa issue.”
While the UFC has run multiple events in China, no pay-per-view cards have been held in the country.
Zhang doesn’t care who future title defenses come against, as the champion believes she can defeat whomever the gold is defended against.
“I think they all want to fight me because I’m a champion,” Zhang said. “I can defend (the belt) several times, maybe for a long time, because I know all my opponents very well. I can beat them.”
It is unknown at this time as to whom Zhang will make her first defense against, as former women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is the only top five ranked fighter booked for a bout at the moment.
