Report: Alexander Volkanovski Was The Backup For UFC 240 Main Event

Alexander Volkanovski is ranked #1 in the UFC Featherweight Division and is potentially next in line for a shot at the UFC Featherweight Championship.

That title shot could’ve come a lot faster for Volkanovski, as he was the backup for the UFC 240 main event between UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway and former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar according to MMA Fighting (citing UFC’s Marc Ratner)

However, both Holloway and Edgar made weight for the title bout, meaning that Volkanovski will have to wait a little bit longer before challenging for UFC gold, unless an issue happens after the weigh-ins. Volkanovski also weighed in for the bout, just in case there is an issue with the champion or challenger post-weigh-ins, and he came in at 144.5 pounds.

Volkanovski would have entered the potential bout riding a seventeen fight winning streak, which includes a total of seven wins under the UFC banner. If Volkanovski would’ve gotten a last second title shot, it would’ve been the first time that he had challenged for the UFC Featherweight Championship.

UFC 240 takes place on Saturday, July 26 from Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada with Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
