Katie Taylor Calls Delfine Persoon Fight “Huge For Women’s Boxing”

Katie Taylor shared her thoughts on her upcoming title unification fight against Delfine Persoon.

Days before she is set to fight Persoon for the undisputed 135-pound titles on June 1, Taylor spoke about the historic fight and is excited about getting to fight at Madison Square Garden. Taylor said the fight is great for women’s boxing as it pits the lightweight division’s two remaining titleholders.

“The chance to fight for the four World titles and the Ring Magazine belt at the Mecca of boxing, MSG, I don’t think you could write a better script, it’s an absolute dream. Persoon is recognized as one of the best in the world pound-for-pound and has been the WBC champ now for over five years so it’s the best against the best. This is huge for women’s boxing,” Taylor said.

Speaking on the actual fight itself, Taylor believes her fight against Persoon will end up being the toughest of her pro career thus far. Taylor has faced a number of notable women’s boxers, such as Cindy Serrano, Anahi Sanchez, Rose Volante and Jessica McCaskill, but Persoon could bring the best in the Irish champion, according to Taylor.

“This fight is going to be the toughest of my career so far, Delfine is a fantastic champion, she’s got 43 wins and just one loss, she’s been a long-reigning champion and she’s a fantastic person. I think it’s going to be a really hard fight. I’ve watched clips of her and she’s very tall and awkward, she punches non-stop for the ten rounds and I think it’s going to be a very physical fight. It’s a huge challenge but the one that I’ve wanted. She’ll bring the best out of me as I have the utmost respect for her and we’re going to lay it all on the line and may the best girl win,” Taylor said.

The fight will crown the first-ever undisputed WBA, WBO, WBC, IBF and Ring Magazine women’s lightweight champion and take place on the undercard of the June 1 Matchroom Boxing show from Madison Square Garden. Fightful will have live coverage of the entire card, headlined by Anthony Joshua vs. Andy Ruiz Jr. for the unified WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles.
