Eddie Hearn Believes Daniel Jacobs Could Be “Extremely Effective” As A Super Middleweight

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn gives his thoughts on Daniel Jacobs’ performance against Canelo Alvarez and his future.

After Jacobs narrowly lost a middleweight title unification against Alvarez in the main event of a DAZN card from the T-Mobile Arena, Hearn, who promotes Jacobs, was interviewed by the DAZN broadcast team and asked what he thought of his performance. The British promoter stated that he was proud of Jacobs performed in the second half of the fight, he did believe that Alvarez was the rightful winner.

“I thought it was a good fight, very technical and cagey at times. I thought Danny started a little too slow. I had him winning five rounds in the fight. I mean, I thought at the backend of the fight, he controlled well. He looked like he was in control of the fight. But you know, to beat the world champion, and Danny was one himself, to beat Canelo in Vegas, you have to do more. I gave him many rounds, but I think the right man won,” Hearn said.

Now that Jacobs will have to go back to the drawing board and figure what is next for his career. Hearn believes that Jacobs, a big middleweight who had a clear size advantage over Alvarez entering their fight, would do well if he moved up to super middleweight.

Although Hearn says DAZN still has several top middleweights for Jacobs to contend with, Matchroom Boxing does have some notable super middleweights on its roster, mainly interim WBA titleholder John Ryder and WBA “Super” champion Callum Smith.

“Danny has to look at the division and the weight class. I’ve said for a while that I think he’d be a great super middleweight as well moving up to 168 pounds. He’s a huge middleweight, a huge guy. At times in there, he looked a little flat. Maybe he didn’t have as much spring in his step as he might have had at a higher weight category. That’s for him and his team to decide. There’s still big fights for him in the middleweight division. If Gennadiy Golovkin doesn’t fight Canelo Alvarez, there’s a rematch there [with Jacobs]. Of course, [WBO champion] Demetrius Andrade has the key to the undisputed [championship] in the division. Those two are quite close. I think he’s going to have a nice rest and really evaluate whether 160 or 168 is the plan. The money, DAZN is at 160, but I think he would be extremely effective at 168 pounds,” Hearn said.
