Wilson Reis Praying The UFC Is Keeping The Flyweight Division Alive
Wilson Reis is back in action this weekend at UFC 236, facing Alexandre Pantoja in a flyweight division encounter.
The men’s portion of the UFC Flyweight Division is reportedly being eliminated, but Reis is praying that it stays alive.
“I’m praying that the UFC keeps the flyweight division,” Reis said to MMA Junkie. “I think it’s very important to the UFC. All the MMA fans I talk to tell me they love our weight class – it’s very dynamic and technical. All combat sports need a lighter weight class. I hope the UFC keeps us on. Up to now, they’ve made no public statement announcing the end of the division. I hope we stay on.”
There is no word at this time as to the future of the man’s flyweight division, but Henry Cejudo is the current king of the weight class.
Reis isn’t a fan of fighting fellow Brazilian fighters, but knew a bout with Pantoja would happen at some point in their respective careers.
“My next bout is against Alexandre Pantoja, who’s also from Brazil,” Reis said. “He’s also well-ranked. Generally, Brazilians don’t like to face other Brazilians in the UFC. I especially don’t like it, but I already knew that this bout would happen sooner than later.”
UFC 236 takes place on Saturday, April 13 from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia with Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
