Sgt. Slaughter Backs WWE’s Decision To Move Forward With ‘Crown Jewel’ And Talks Not Being Retired
The Sarge on a number of topics.
The later portion of October heading into November was a controversial time for World Wrestling Entertainment. With the news having to do with Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder being planned by the Saudi government rising to the forefront of various news outlets, WWE was caught in the middle of the fray because of their ‘Crown Jewel’ show which took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 2nd. The show occurred and concluded and now the sports-entertainment company does not refer to it at all on WWE TV.
On the build-up to ‘Crown Jewel’ and coming out of it, a few WWE stars of the past offered their opinions on the sensitive subject and one of the recent ones to do so was WWE Hall Of Famer Sgt. Slaughter. Slaughter was interviewed by TMZ Sports and stated that WWE is a entertainment company and has nothing to do with politics and added that if a situation as such occurred while he was in his prime days, the company would’ve continued on with the show as well.
“Oh same way. We’re an entertainment company. We’re not anything to do with politics, and we’re basically there to entertain everybody. Not only just the American people, but people all over the world. That’s what we do for a living, and that’s what makes our company so great.” He said.
At the age of 70-years old, the Sarge does not consider himself retired. He was asked about if he’s retired or not and responded by saying he always has his wrestling boots in his bag whenever he makes appearances.
“No I do not [Consider myself retired]. Every once in a while I’ll get into the ring and if somebody says something bad about the Sarge or America and wants to pick a fight with the Sarge, I’ve always got my bag with me.” He said. “Whether it’d be a singles match, I’d prefer a tag match but, I’ve always got the boots with me so the Cobra Clutch is always ready and Slaughter Cannon is always loaded”.
During the first WWE and Saudi Arabia super-show ‘Greatest Royal Rumble’, WWE announcer Michael Cole mistakenly said during the broadcast that Sgt. Slaughter passed away. To view that clip, click here.
