Exclusive: Gegard Mousasi: I’m Sorry To The Female Fighters, They’re Not That Interesting
Is the UFC in a decline? Gegard Mousasi seems to think so.
Mousasi and his Bellator 206 opponent Rory MacDonald spoke on a media call last week, saying that UFC’s main event scene isn’t quite what it once was. When speaking to Fightful.com’s James Lynch ahead of his huge champion vs. champion bout at Bellator 206, Mousasi clarified his statements and said that the UFC decline he spoke of was more about star power than it was about pay-per-view buys.
“I’m not talking about pay-per-view (sales). The last few cards they’ve put on are not intriguing. Female fighters are the main event. No one wants to pay for that. I’m sorry to the female fighters, they’re just not that interesting. Let’s be honest. Cyborg vs. Amanda Nunes. (Nicco Montano) I never heard of her and she was a main event. Who wants to see that as a co-main event?,” Mousasi asked. “The fights are not that interesting.”
It’s worth noting since 2017, Bellator MMA has also had five cards headlined by women — primarily Julia Budd and Ilima-Lea MacFarlane.
