Exclusive: Lou DiBella Talks Excitement Levels For September 8 Barclays Center Card

If there’s anyone in New York that knows the boxing scene well, it is promoter Lou DiBella.

DiBella, who has served a key role in getting major boxing cards into the city of New York, recently spoke to Fightful in a recent conference call to talk about the upcoming Showtime-televised card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on September 8. In the main event, Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter will compete for the vacant WBC welterweight title.

On the topic of that fight, DiBella expressed excitement at the fight, one between two boxers with plenty of history fighting in Brooklyn that has been in the making for a long time. DiBella believed that fight was inevitable and that it is one to cap off a great night of boxing.

“We’ve put on some amazing cards. This is another one and frankly I’m as excited about this one as I’ve been about anyone of them in a long, long time. I’ve said this main event, Danny vs. Shawn, is a fight I love for years and it’s a fight that was inevitable. It’s now happening and it’s a great fight,” DiBella said.

But fans won’t just be treated to Garcia vs. Porter. The undercard features a number of boxers in big fights, including Adam Kownacki taking on former heavyweight world champion Charles Martin and Yordenis Ugas vs. Cesar Barrionuevo in a WBC welterweight eliminator.

Though not on the televised portion of the card, Amanda Serrano will compete in a vacant WBO junior welterweight title fight and if victorious, Serrano becomes the third boxer in history, regardless of gender, to win a title in six weight classes. DiBella believes the card will be truly one to remember for those in attendance

“Everything else on this card is important, has significance, history being made. There’s going to be a major contender, either Martin again or Kownacki in the heavyweight division. It’s a great, great card, headlined by two great champions in Garcia and Porter. It’s another great card in the run of great cards that Showtime Boxing and Brooklyn Boxing has done. It’s continuing to build those brands and I think it’s going to be a big night for boxing and on September 8, I hope everybody joins us,” DiBella said.

The September 8 card will be the Barclays Center’s 30th boxing event to take place at the venue.
