UFC interim Welterweight Champion Colby Covington isn’t quick to make friends these days, but seems to have made a pretty positive impression on the Impact Wrestling locker room.
The controversial persona and antics of Covington helped springboard him (along with outstanding talent as a fighter) to a UFC Championship this year. Ahead of that, however, Covington increased his visibility by appearing for Impact Wrestling as a part of the American Top Team angle last year.
While there, Covington befriended Kevin Matthews, who wrestles under the name KM. While speaking to Fightful.com recently, Km broke down how involved he was with Colby, and Covington’s respect for pro wrestling.
“I’m good buddies with Colby, I talk to him on a regular basis. I got along with him during the whole process. The show where he came to New Jersey and did the TyQuil thing (a parody on champion Tyron Woodley), that was on our show. I put that whole segment together. Colby is a massive pro wrestling fan. That’s the difference. Same with Chael Sonnen. Colby has said after he’s done with UFC, he wants to transition full-time into pro wrestling,” said KM.
Between trash talking, meeting President Donald Trump, and other divisive antics, KM claims that Covington’s personality isn’t really that far off from what people see on camera.
“A lot of people think he’s putting on a complete show, when you get to hang out with him, you realize this isn’t really that much of an act, which is the best part of it,” KM said. “He’s great, our personalities clash in the best way possible. Unless you were a die hard MMA fan, you didn’t realize that he was a UFC fighter when he was in Impact, now he’s red hot. I’d love to see him back. I had that conversation with him, and he said ‘I want to come back.'”
