Report: UFC Was Putting Together Conor McGregor vs. Rafael Dos Anjos Before Bus Attack, New Contract Also Off The Table
UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor and his entourage stormed a bus full of UFC fighters this past Thursday, rumored to be going for revenge against UFC 223 headliner Khabib Nurmagomedov.
McGregor has since turned himself into authorities and then was released from prison after paying $50,000 for bail.
Outside of some future legal ramifications and money loss to to possible lawsuits, another thing the Irishman may have cost himself was a chance to win a title in a third weight class.
Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting is stating that McGregor was also set to discuss a potential UFC Interim Welterweight Title bout against former UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael Dos Anjos.
“Another plan discussed was to book Conor McGregor vs. Rafael dos Anjos for the interim welterweight title in the spring, though McGregor and the UFC had to come to terms on a new contract first,” says Helwani.
The bus attacking McGregor was also set to negotiate a new deal with the UFC as well, but UFC President Dana White says that it won’t be happening for now after the incident this past Thursday.
“We were actually working on a new deal and a new plan for him all this week,” White told ESPN. “Then he shows up and this happens.”
If McGregor had kept his cool and if the statements from Helwani and White turned out to be true, it would’ve given McGregor the opportunity to become the first UFC fighter to hold three belts in three different weight classes.
