Frankie Edgar Issues Statement On UFC 222 Defeat

Former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar suffered a first round knockout loss to Brian Ortega in the co-main event of UFC 222.

It was the first time that the New Jersey native had been finished in his professional MMA career, which has lasted almost thirteen years now.

Edgar took a little time to recover from the loss before issuing the following statement on Twitter:

Saturday did not go as planned, congrats to Ortega he definitely got me with some good ones. Thanks to all my peers, my team, my friends, and my fans for their nice words, they don't go unnoticed. All I can do now is dust myself off and get ready to put it all on the line again.

Ortega was actually a late replacement for UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway, who pulled out of a title defense against Edgar due to injury.

The win for Ortega will now get him a shot at the UFC Featherweight Title down the line as Holloway recovers, while Edgar’s next move is unknown at this time.
