Colby Covington Believes Title Shot Close If He Beats Maia
Colby Covington is competing in the co-main event on UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo and his opponent is Demian Maia.
The surging welterweight contender believes is he can get by Maia, a shot of the UFC Welterweight Title wouldn’t be far behind.
“Then Tyron Woodley is next, and five-round fights are going to favor me,” Covington told MMA Junkie Radio. “I’ve only hit Gear 1. Wait until I hit Gear 2 and 3 against Tyron. Man, you’re about to see a new Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington.”
Covington and the UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley used to be training partners, but an ever growing rivalry has incensed both of them in recent months.
Despite his rivalry with Woodley, the welterweight star doesn’t care who he beats for the title, just as long as he takes home the gold one day.
“It doesn’t matter who it is,” Covington said. “There’s one singular goal and one singular focus, and that’s the world title. I do feel I have the skill set to hold the welterweight title for a long time. Whoever the champion is at the time, that’s who I want.”
UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo takes place on Saturday, October 28 from the Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil with Lyoto Machida and Derek Brunson headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, which airs live on Fox Sports 1.
