Yoel Romero Gives Reason Behind Not Attacking Robert Whittaker’s Injured Knee

Robert Whittaker won the UFC Interim Middleweight Title at UFC 213, but suffered a knee injury early in the first round of their fight.

Yoel Romero didn’t attack the injured knee of Whittaker during the fight and now the fighter explains why.

“[I noticed it] after every time I would try to do the same side kick to the leg, he would change it,” Romero said during the UFC 213 post-fight conference. “Yes, of course [I tried to use leg kicks], but he didn’t give me the opportunity. When I would try to do the same side kick to the leg, he would switch his leg, and I was running the risk of remaining in his [striking] guard, within reach of his hands.”

Whittaker now moves onto a title unification fight against Michael Bisping later this year, while Romero’s next move isn’t known at this time.

No matter what Romero’s next move is, the fighter wants his fans to know that the game isn’t over yet.

“I’m fine, I’m ready. I have a pain in my left leg so let’s hope it’s nothing serious, but we’re still in the battle,” Romero said. “The game is not over, we have a second part. It’s to be continued.”

The loss at UFC 213 was only the second defeat Romero has suffered as a pro, the other loss came to Rafael Cavalcante at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov in 2011.
