EXCLUSIVE: Hurricane Helms Talks Unprotected Chair Shots

Shane Helms says risky actions in the ring should be left up to the wrestler and their employer.

With decades in the business, Helms answered questions from listeners during his weekly appearance on the Fightful Wrestling podcast. The question was motivated by a chair shot by Cody Rhodes at Ring of Honor Undisputed Legacy. Helms had no qualms expressing his feelings towards unprotected chair shots to the head.

"Hate them (unprotected chair shots), especially if I'm getting them. I always put my hand up," said Helms."I'm not gonna tell anybody not to do what they want to do. If I'm the president of a company, I don't know if it's something that I wanna put out there, but at the same time if that's what that guy want's to do, he wants to get bashed in his fucking head with a chair, it's not what I want in my life but who am I to say. Unless I'm in that authority position, who am I to say don't do it. If you're talking Rock beating Mankind's head out, which is a pretty famous head bashing incident, back in those days, we didn't have quite the science. It's common sense now and something everyone should have known that bashing yourself in the fucking head isn't a good idea. But, a lot of guys don't think about it, when you're young and invincible, you just don't think about injuries." continued Helms.

Helms would talk about the risks he took as a young wrestler and some of the worst injuries that happened to him in the ring. He would also answer questions about Impact Wrestling's relationship with Pro Wrestling NOAH and the early days of being a smaller guy in professional wrestling.

His weekly podcast with Sean Ross Sapp airs Friday and is available to free Fightful.com members immediately, and to non-members a few days later.

The show is now open to non-members at this link.
