Play-by-Play

(#3) Aspen Ladd vs. Norma Dumont

Round One – The main event of the evening gets underway and it takes almost a full two-minutes for a strike to be throw as Dumont finally opens the action with a straight left that partially lands. Ladd fires back with a straight left of her own but it narrowly misses. Dumont opens up a bit with a pair of jabs that both find a home right on the bridge of Ladd’s nose. Dumont throws a straight right but Ladd is able to avoid the attempt but can’t get out of the way of another straight right from the Brazilian. Neither competitor does much else to warrant any offense as the buzzer sounds to close the opening frame.

Round Two – Round number two is underway and the first-minute of the frame is more of the same with both fighters remaining very cautious and trying to find their range. Ladd throws an overhand left, Dumont waves it off, saying it didn’t land but Ladd dives right in and gets her pressed against the fence inside of the clinch. Ladd teases a takedown but Dumont is able to slide of out danger and circles back to the center of the octagon. Dumont can’t quite find the range for a slick 1-2 but lands a straight left at the buzzer and a pretty lackluster second round comes to a close.

Round Three – After a pair of not-so-thrilling rounds, round number three is upon us. Dumont still can’t quite find her range as an overhand right misses, Ladd dives for a double-leg but is stymied by Dumont. A straight left finds a home from Dumont as Ladd again dives in for a takedown but ends up clinching Dumont against the cage, where Ladd lands a solid elbow. Ladd drags Dumont to the center of the octagon before letting go of the clinch but lands a straight left on the break. Ladd dives in for yet another takedown but Dumont is alert to the attempt, stuffs the takedown and hits Ladd with an elbow on the clinch break as both head back to the center of the octagon. Ladd initiates a clinch but has no time to work as the buzzer sounds to send this one to round number four.

Round Four – Main event rounds are upon us and Ladd immediately clinches Dumont against the fence. Ladd doesn’t do much work whilst in the clinch but is able to eat up some clock and garner nearly two full minutes of control before Dumont breaks the hold and circles back to the center of the octagon. Dumont finally finds a home for the straight right and follows it up with a jab that also lands. Ladd lands a left hook and uses it to get inside and locks up another clinch but Dumont reverses momentum and takes Ladd to the mat and ends up on top control. Dumont seems content to get some of that control time back and doesn’t do much while in top control but Ladd sweeps herself to top control and fires down some heavy elbows but the buzzer sounds to save Dumont from any further damage and this one is headed to round number five.

Round Five – The fifth and final frame opens up and Ladd immediately presses Dumont against the fence. Ladd is relentlessly going for a single-leg takedown but Dumont reverses momentum and now has Ladd clinched against the cage but Ladd quickly counters and regains her position in control as the first-half of this fifth and final round has quickly dwindled away as Ladd continues to eat up the control time. Ladd lands a crisp elbow to an already opened up nose of Dumont and begins to work the wrist, still trying for a takedown as we approach the final minute of the bout. Ladd rides out the rest of the round still in control whilst in the clinch as the buzzer sounds that’ll send this one to the judges’ scorecards.

Result: Norma Dumont def. (#3) Aspen Ladd via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47)

Andrei Arlovski vs. Carlos Felipe

Round One – The co-main event of the evening is officially underway. Arlovski lands a lead leg kick to open the action as both men remain cautious for the opening minute of the bout. Arlovski lands a side kick to the body of Felipe, who responds with a lead leg kick and a straight right that both land. Mostly still a feeling out process for both fighters until Arlovski opens up with a right hook that just misses and follows it up with a head kick that’s mostly blocked by Felipe. Arlovski again goes for the right hook, left high kick combination but it’s blocked yet again by Felipe as the buzzer sounds that ends a fairly timid opening frame.

Round Two – Round number two opens with Felipe landing a side kick to the body of Arlovski, who responds with a 1-2 that narrowly misses. Felipe lands an overhand right that catches the attention of Arlovski, who fires back with a left hook and narrowly missed a head kick to boot. Both men just recklessly throw hooks and somehow nobody lands much of anything in the wild exchange. Felipe lands a kick to Arlovski’s body and just misses a follow-up elbow. Referee Herb Dean warns Felipe to watch his fingers pointing out but the fight continues without a stoppage. Felipe initiates a clinch against the fence but quickly circles out and back to the center of the octagon, where he lands a right hook and follows it up with a straight left that also lands. The pair throw a wild flurry of punches but aren’t able to land anything of significance as the buzzer sounds to send this one to the final frame.

Round Three – The third and final round gets underway and Felipe throws a flurry of combinations that are all blocked or negated by Arlovski, who clinches Felipe up. Felipe is able to reverse momentum and pushes himself free and circles back to the middle of the cage. Felipe lands a perfectly timed left uppercut to the body of Arlovski and the Brazilian gets Arlovski clinched up against the cage for a brief moment before allowing himself and the former UFC Heavyweight Champion to get back to the center of the octagon. Felipe lands a straight right that sends Arlovski to one knee, follows it up with ground and pound and looks for the finish but Arlovski is able to gather himself and get back to his feet, where he pushes Felipe off and gets back to the middle of the cage as the final 90-seconds approach. Both men look absolutely spent and Felipe pushes himself onto Arlovski against the fence and neither man looks to be able to garner much more out of themselves as the final 30-seconds are upon us. Referee Herb Dean forces both men to get back to the middle of the cage but neither competitor finds much to land as the buzzer sounds to send this one to the judges’ scorecards.

Result: Andrei Arlovski def. Carlos Felipe via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Jim Miller vs. Erick Gonzalez

Round One – The action gets going when Miller immediately latches onto Gonzalez and forces him against the fence inside of the clinch. Gonzalez lands an elbow and uses it to take Miller to the mat and immediately gains top control. Miller slides to the fence and uses the momentum to get back to the feet. Gonzalez quickly lands a straight right that wobbles Miller to one knee, Gonzalez goes in for the finish but the veteran Miller is able to transition into top control to avoid danger and is now in the driver’s seat. Miller gets some separation and starts landing a some heavy shots from the top but Gonzalez pushes back to the fence and gets back to his feet. Gonzalez looks much more comfortable than Miller on the feet and lands a straight right to the body as well as a left jab. Miller lands an overhand left that stuns Gonzalez, follows it up with a left uppercut which forced Gonzalez to initiate the clinch against the fence to allow himself some time to recover. Miller reverses momentum and trips up Gonzalez but Gonzalez avoids the takedown and separates himself from Miller but the buzzer sounds to end the opening frame.

Round Two – Round number begins and Miller ducks out of the way of a headlock from Gonzalez and lands a massive overhand left that puts Gonzalez out cold and referee Mark Smith waves this one off. Statement win for the veteran Jim Miller in his 50th professional fight.

Manon Fiorot vs. Mayra Bueno Silva

Round One – Fiorot opens the action with a straight left that narrowly misses but the French-born contender lands a right hook that follows. Silva missed a wild spinning back kick but lands a kick to the body of Fiorot before eating a 1-2 combinations from Fiorot. The combinations keep on flowing for Fiorot as she begins to pour on the offense. That right hook is finding a home quite often and Silva isn’t firing much back in response. Fiorot mixes in a heavy straight right to the body and Silva drops to the mat after slipping on a front kick attempt. A side kick to the body from Fiorot stops Silva in her tracks and yet another right hook from Fiorot finds it’s mark. Fiorot lands a perfectly timed takedown and gets top control. Silva scrambles and used a knee-bar attempt to get back to her feet but the buzzer sounds to send this one the second round.

Round Two – Round number two begins and Fiorot immediately goes for a takedown but Silva stuffs the attempt and latches onto Fiorot’s neck but is quickly shoved aside and ends up pressed against the fence. After a quick lull in the action, referee Chris Tognoni breaks the pair to retrieve Silvia’s mouthpiece and the two go back into the clinch against the fence. Not much work is being done so Tognoni breaks them up and directs both fighters to go to the center of the octagon where the fight is resumed. Fiorot picks right up where she left off in round one and fires off a slick combo that’s ended with a right hook that lands flush. Silva partially lands a lead leg kick but is met with yet another right hook as Fiorot continues the onslaught. Silva throws a massive straight right but Fiorot is able to duck under the punch and gets into the clinch. Silva quickly breaks the hold but eats a front kick to the body as well as a straight right from Fiorot. Silva taunts in the middle of the cage with both her hands behind her back but Fiorot remains focused and continues to throw the combinations. Fiorot partially lands a head kick and follows it up with another side kick to the body before Silva throws a wild head kick but missed as the buzzer sounds to signal the end of the second round.

Round Three – The third and final round is underway and Fiorot continues her barrage of front kicks, that seemingly all find it’s mark. Fiorot throws a flurry of punches before diving in for a takedown but ends up clinching Silva against the fence. Fiorot perfectly times a toss and gets Silva down to the mat and immediately gets into half guard. Silva begins to scramble and neary gets back to her feet but Fiorot is quick to transition to partial back control and brings to fire down ground and pound to a beaten, bloody Silva. Fiorot gets back to her feet and lays into a downed Silva with some leg kicks as referee Tognoni calls for a break in the action to get Silva back to her feet after what he deemed as not enough offense from Fiorot to keep the position. Silva sticks out her tongue and laughs in the face of Fiorot but ends up eating a straight right before Fiorot gets her clinched against the fence. After virtually no offense takes place, referee Tognoni again forces both women to circle back to the center of the octagon. The final minute has come and it appears as if Silva needs a miracle finish to steal a victory from Fiorot but neither competitor does much as the buzzer sounds that’ll send this one to the judges’ scorecards.

Result: Manon Fiorot def. Mayra Bueno Silva via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
