Play-by-Play

Aljamain Sterling (C) vs. (#2) Sean O’Malley — UFC Bantamweight Championship

Round One – Sterling opens the action with a low kick. O’Malley lands a front kick to the body, then another, before finding a home for a straight right to the body. O’Malley lands another front kick to the body as the champion comes back with a kick to O’Malley’s lead leg. O’Malley lands a front kick to the body, Sterling counters with three-straight lead leg kicks, before adding a fourth. Sterling continues to go to the well of low kicks, O’Malley lands a spinning back kick to the body, Sterling dives in for a takedown but O’Malley holds firm as Sterling lands a few short shots inside of the clinch as the horn sounds to end the opening frame.

Round Two – O’Malley slips on a front kick and Sterling clinches to open round number two. O’Malley slides out of the clinch and circles back to the center of the cage. O’Malley wallops Sterling with a counter right hook and Sterling is down! O’Malley starts hammering ground and pound, referee Marc Goddard is keeping a close eye on Sterling, O’Malley is relentless, and this one is over! The Sugar Show is officially here!

Zhang Weili (C) vs. (#5) Amanda Lemos — UFC Strawweight Championship

Round One – Zhang opens with a massive leg kick that drops Lemos! Zhang drops down into top control and looks for ground and pound. Lemos scoots herself to the fence, Zhang traps one of the challenger’s arms down and starts hammering shots from the top. Slicing elbows now land for the champion as Lemos gets to a knee, but Zhang trios her right back down. Lemos locks in a head and arm choke out of nowhere and Zhang is in trouble! Zhang lands some knees to the back and uses it to roll to the back and gets back control! What a scramble! Zhang starts hammering heavy shots from the top, Lemos rolls to her back, but Zhang is relentless with the ground and pound. Lemos gets to a knee but Zhang continues the heavy shots, Lemos gets up, Zhang dumps her right back down to the mat at the horn, and this one is headed to round number two.

Fightful scores this round 10-9 to Zhang.

Round Two – Lemos throws a head kick to open but Zhang catches it and spins the challenger around. Lemos lands a right hook, Zhang clinches, and gets Lemos down to the mat. Zhang lands a few shots from the top, then starts to open up a bit more and starts dropping some elbows. Zhang spins to the back and drags Lemos down with her. Lemos scrambles to her back, Zhang starts slicing elbows across her forehead, but Lemos gets herself back to the feet. Zhang quickly trips Lemos right back down to the mat, Lemos scrambles, Zhang gets the back, btu the buzzer sounds to send this one to round number three.

Round Three – Zhang lands a straight left to the body to open round number three. Zhang clinches and trips Lemos to the mat. Zhang stands up and starts firing off leg kicks to a downed Lemos. Zhang jumps back down and quickly gains side control. Zhang spins to back control and looks for the choke but decides to lay in some punches to soften Lemos up a bit. Lemos rolls to her stomach but scrambles to half guard. Lemos is showing some really good defensive work in this one, but it’s all Zhang, thus far through nearly three full rounds. Lemos gets back to her feet, Zhang lights her up with a pair of elbows inside of the clinch, and the champion’s pressure has been absolutely relentless in this one. Zhang backs off and the horn sounds to send this one to championship rounds.

Round Four – Zhang opens with a side kick to the body. Zhang lands a low kick, then a straight left to the body. Lemos lands a right hook but Zhang lands a perfectly timed takedown and Lemos finds herself on the mat once again. Lemos shoves Zhang off of her and gets back to her feet, but Zhang clinches. Lemos breaks the hold and circles back to the center of the octagon. Lemos throws a wild combination to end the round, but Zhang avoids them all as the buzzer sounds to send this one to the fifth and final round.

Fightful scores this round 10-9 to Zhang. 40-35 to Zhang after four rounds.

Round Five – Zhang clocks Lemos down to the mat and immediately starts hammering heavy shots from the top! Zhang has seemingly landed 100 shots here, Lemos is still scrambling and defending but Zhang is relentless and continues the onslaught. Lemos scrambles and gets to top control, but Zhang reverses position and continues the relentless offense. A graphic was just shown on the broadcast displaying that Zhang has outlanded Lemos 265-21 with about two-minutes to go in this one. Zhang starts drilling Lemos in the ribs with knee after knee as this one ticks under one-minute to go. Another graphic is now shown to show the striking difference of 273-21 is the biggest in women’s history. Lemos scrambles back to her feet, Zhang lands a side kick to the body, Lemos rushes in for one last hail mary, but the horn sounds to send this one to the judge’s scorecards.

(#11) Neil Magny vs. (#13) Ian Machado Garry

Round One – Garry opens the action with a 1-2. Garry lands a low kick, Magny clinches, Garry shoves Magny back, and lands another low kick. Magny throws a front kick to the body, Garry catches it, and shoves Magny against the fence. Garry trips Magny to the mat but allows the veteran back up. Garry continues to go to the well of lead leg kicks, then wallops Magny with a massive leg kick and Magny is down! Garry waves Magny back up and cracks him with a front kick to the face, Magny latches onto the leg, but Garry shakes it off and circles back to the center of the octagon. Garry lands a side kick to the body, then a right hook back up top as Magny clinches as the horn sounds to end an eventful opening frame.

Fightful scores this round 10-9 to Garry.

Round Two – Garry whiffs on a head kick to open round number two. Garry lands a low kick, followed by a calf kick, then a side kick to the body. Magny latches on for a takedown but Garry holds himself upright. Magny has back control and leaps onto Garry’s back. Garry shakes Magny off and circles back to the cenrer of the octagon. Referee Keith Peterson gives Magny a second to retrieve his mouthpiece that just fell out. Garry drills Magny with a leg kick and Magny is hurt! Garry lights up Magny with a bevy of shots, Magny is limping pretty considerably, Garry wallops the injured leg with a big kick, and Magny is pretty much upright purely because of the fence at this point. Garry lands another huge lead leg kick, then a 1-2 back up top, Magny goes for a wild jump kick but eats a right hook from Garry at the buzzer, and this one is headed to the third and final round.

Round Three – Garry lands a jab that trips up Magny to open round number three. Garry pops the jab, then another, then a third, and Magny is getting lit up due to his severely limited movement with the left leg injury. Garry wallops Magny with a 1-2 back up top, then drops him with another lead leg kick. Garry is screaming at Magny and waving at him to get up, which he eventually does. Garry lands a straight right to the body, then a low kick, then a jab, then a front kick to the body. Garry lands a 1-2, then a straight left, and yet another low kick. Garry lands a heavy lead leg kick, then a calf kick, and Magny’s left leg is absolutely destroyed. Garry drops Magny with another leg kick and Garry tells him to get back up, which he eventually does. Garry is teeing off on Magny, lands a right hook, then a 1-2, then a head kick, and dumps Magny down to the mat with a takedown. Garry looks for a last-second choke, but the horn sounds, and this one is headed to the judge’s scorecards.

Da’Mon Blackshear vs. Mario Bautista

Round One – Blackshear immediately clinches and has Bautista pressed against the cage. Blackshear trips Bautista to the mat and quickly has top control. Bautista scrambles and gets to his feet, Blackshear stays latched on, but Bautista forces the break. Bautista lands an elbow, Blackshear lands a side kick to the body, then another. Blackshear lands another body kick, then dives in for a takedown, and gets Bautista down to the mat. Bautista gets right back up, Blackshear drags him right back down to the mat but Bautista scrambles right back up to his feet. Blackshear scoops and slams Bautista back down, Bautista has a guillotine locked in but Blackshear defends well and is out of danger. Bautista scrambles back to his feet, Blackshear jabs, and the horn sounds to end an eventful opening frame.

Round Two – Bautista lands a straight left to the body to open round number two. Bautista goes for the takedown, Blackshear defends well, and lands a few short elbows inside of the clinch before forcing the break. Bautista clinches, Blackshear reverses position and has Bautista pressed against the fence. Blackshear circles back to the center of the cage, Bautista lands a front kick to the body as Blackshear lands a low kick. Bautista dives in for a double leg but Blackshear defends well and has Bautista pressed against the cage before circling out. Bautista lands a right hook, Blackshear lands a takedown, but Bautista pops right back up. Blackshear lands a low kick, then a 1-2 back up top, and a right hook. Bautista goes for a takedown, Blackshear holds himself up but eats an elbow, then another form Bautista as the buzzer sounds to send this one to the third and final round.

Round Three – A left hook lands for Bautista to open round number three. Bautista lands a right hook, then shoots for a takedown, but Blackshear defends well and keeps himself upright. Blackshear lands a 1-2, then a low kick, and a straight left. Blackshear whiffs on a head kick, Bautista finally secures a takedown, and quickly has back control. Blackshear gets to his knees, then to his feet, but Bautista drags him right back down to the mat. Blackshear scrambles back to the feet and drops Bautista with a right hook! Bautista clinches, both men kind of tumble to the mat, Bautista lands on top and starts hammering ground and pound until the horn sounds and this one is headed to the judge’s scorecards.

(#6) Marlon Vera vs. (#12) Pedro Munhoz

Round One – Munhoz opens the action with a low kick. Munhoz whiffs on a spinning back kick to the body as Vera comes back with a leg kick of his own. Munhoz lands a front kick to the body, Vera jabs, and Munhoz lands a straight right to the body. Munhoz dives in for a takedown, Vera slides out of the way, and pops the jab. Vera lands a straight left, then pops the jab, and lands a low kick. Munhoz’s nose is busted up a bit as Vera continues to work the jab, and the horn sounds to end an entertaining opening frame.

Round Two – Munhoz lands a front kick to the body to open round number two. Vera has a high kick blocked, then lands a front kick to the body. Vera lands a low kick, Munhoz lands a left hook, then a pair of calf kicks. Vera snaps Munhoz’s head back with a straight left, Munhoz comes back with a low kick, followed by a left hook. Munhoz finds a home for another left hook, then a straight right, before whiffing on a spinning back kick to the body. Vera lands a 1-2, then a leg kick, as Munhoz lands a low kick of his own. Munhoz plants a big inside leg kick on Vera, who comes back with a right hook to the body. Munhoz lands a straight left, Vera jabs, and lands a right hook. Munhoz jabs, then lands a low kick, and Vera plants a calf kick on Munhoz’s lead leg. Munhoz lands a low kick, then another, followed by a low kick at the horn, and this one is headed to the third and final round.

Round Three – Munhoz opens the final frame with a right hook and a leg kick. Munhoz lands a low kick, Vera rips off a three-piece combination, followed by a 1-2, and a right hook. Vera continues to fire off and land the jab, Munhoz drills Vera with a right hook that drops Vera to a knee but Vera pops right back up. Vera lands a 1-2, then pops the jab, and Munhoz’s nose is now busted open after showing some damage early on in round one. Vera’s turning up the pressure, possibly knowing he needs a finish here, and lands yet another jab. Vera continues to pepper the jab, then a low kick, and another jab. Munhoz lands a 1-2, Vera whiffs on a high kick, and Vera lands a left hook. Munhoz lands a left hook, Vera lands a jab, then another, and a 1-2. Vera whiffs on a spinning back kick, as does Munhoz, and this one is headed to the judge’s scorecards.
